The software radios are USRPs capable of DC-6GHz frequencies directly connected at 10GE. Devices from Cisco, Arista, Juniper and HP, supplemented by virtual images are supported by an OpenStack cloud, with all nodes connected at a minimum of dual 10GE, and a large backend processing and storage facility comprising of a 100TB Hadoop Cluster | ||

The scopes are to adapt first existing EPC architectures to the requirements of 5G radio. Then a practical testing and experimentation pre-product implementation will be executed, providing to the partners the realistic test-bed infrastructure. | Scope of competence being offered: | The interests and the competences of the researchers of the Telecommunication Networks Group (TNG) of the Politecnico di Torino (http://www.telematica.polito.it/) are very well aligned with the topics of P14 and P16.BackgroundWe have experience on virtualization, energy savings (in the past applied mainly to distributed software routers architectures) and on SDN.We have been working on virtualization in software routers for the last eight years, covering the following topics:- Design of distributed routers architectures [11,12,13,14]- Performance analysis of distribute routers architecture in a virtualized environment [3,9]- Energy aware distributed router design [2,4,5,6]
In the past we pursued two activities related to SDN, one in the performance analysis field [10], the other one in the measurement area [1]. More recently, we started addressing the following topics on SDN that we believe may be of interest in the project: – scalability of reactive flow routing in (OpenDayLight) SDN controllers, specifically targeting the access network (POP) of a Telecom operators – integration of SDN controller (e.g., OpenDayLight) with cloud computing allocator (e.g., OpenNebula) to allow the joint consolidation of network and computational resources to reduce power consumption, by allowing network-aware VM migration – integration between on-line traffic monitoring tools and SDN controllers (specifically, OpenDayLight) to enable traffic engineering techniques and improve QoE for users accessing real-time video streaming – “optimal/wise” placement of distributed SDN controllers in a large size network – software-controlled WiFi access networks to optimize the downlink/uplink bandwidth by exploiting load-balancing among neighboring access points, in the specific case of residential users with WiFi-equipped ADSL modems. Furthermore, we have also a strong expertise on on-line scheduling algorithms for resource allocation problems, which have been applied mostly to packet switching systems in the past. Finally, we have some expertise in energy-aware network design. Simula is fully owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. The laboratory’s mission is to increase knowledge and promote innovation in society and industry through basic research of the internationally highest quality. Simula’s research is funded through competitive grants from national funding agencies and the EC, research contracts with industry, and a basic allowance from the state. Recent evaluations state that Simula is an acknowledged contributor to top-level research in its focus areas. | Scope of competence being offered: | Internet tools need to become fully pervasive, interactive and intelligent, being at the same time capable of progressively evolving to accommodate services composed from intermittently available sub-pieces, micro-services: software modules or services with reduced computational requirements and which may be managed by any entity. Micro-services per se do not provide a value-add for Internet stakeholders, even though they have the potential to contribute to such a value-add, by considering an adequate, self-organizing, orchestration of dynamic services, able to combine on-the-fly knowledge and information made (intermittently) available, giving support to augmented entertainment, business, and social experiences. We are working on self-organised ecosystems that can track and generate useful information and knowledge available when and wherever required, thus contributing to a better inclusion of social and context awareness in services. | Scope of competence being offered: | The FUB research team on User Aspects provides expertise on:- human factors, human computer interaction, user modelling, human performance evaluation, usability, user experience in different application sectors of ICT and mediated communication, scenario engineering and foresight methodologies,- socio-organisational research, design and development of trials involving end users in field and in laboratory, technology acceptance evaluation by the user, predicting models of user acceptance, microsimulation models of ICT adoption and diffusion.These skills have been applied in different research fields: e-inclusion of elderly people, domotics, training in crisis management emulated environment, T-government, digital television, distance learning, teleworking, telemedicine, videoconferencing, technology mediated interpersonal communication.Given the above expertise, we can contribute to 5G network virtualisation and to network and service management by realising experimentations involving users, performing user experience evaluations and usability tests. The expected impact is in modelling the service quality by the end-users and measuring the user experience within the context of 5G services. In particular our contribution can include:- Modelling classes of end-users for the participatory design and implementation of future 5G services (user requirements)- Human factors design of 5G systems/services by the UCD (User Centred Design) methodology, also contributing to the implementation of the technological platform by involving real-users- Design and realisation of trials with end-users in laboratory and on field, to evaluate the emerging 5G solutions in terms of user experience and user acceptance. | ||

| Scope of competence being offered: | BME is active in three major areas of research and innovation activities relevant to 5GPPP. First, BME offers hands-on expertize in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with a focus on virtualization, end-to-end service programmability, fast prototyping, open-source solutions and live demonstrations. Second, BME has a strong track record in core networking research, especially in network infrastructure resilience (IP-level, multi-domain, optical, etc.) and routing (IP Fast ReRoute, multi-domain, router virtualization, etc.). Third, BME conducts research in the socio-economic aspects of networking with an emphasis on multi-stakeholder cooperation and competition scenarios, incentive-compatible mechanisms, and how technology impacts society.Accordingly, we have identified three specific activities in P16 we would like to contribute to.
Since a multi-domain/operator environment changes the playing field with regard to SLAs, we foresee that topic 2 could also be pursued in a research-oriented direction in P12. Furthermore, BME offers its competence in the socio-economic impact assessment of ICT (as demonstrated in leading the corresponding task in FP7 EARTH on energy efficiency) to be used at the 5GPPP level in CSA. | Scope of competence being offered: | The interests and the competences of the researchers of the Telecommunication Networks Group (TNG) of the Politecnico di Torino (http://www.telematica.polito.it/) are very well aligned with the topics of P14 and P16.BackgroundWe have experience on virtualization, energy savings (in the past applied mainly to distributed software routers architectures) and on SDN.We have been working on virtualization in software routers for the last eight years, covering the following topics:- Design of distributed routers architectures [11,12,13,14]- Performance analysis of distribute routers architecture in a virtualized environment [3,9]- Energy aware distributed router design [2,4,5,6]
In the past we pursued two activities related to SDN, one in the performance analysis field [10], the other one in the measurement area [1]. More recently, we started addressing the following topics on SDN that we believe may be of interest in the project: – scalability of reactive flow routing in (OpenDayLight) SDN controllers, specifically targeting the access network (POP) of a Telecom operators – integration of SDN controller (e.g., OpenDayLight) with cloud computing allocator (e.g., OpenNebula) to allow the joint consolidation of network and computational resources to reduce power consumption, by allowing network-aware VM migration – integration between on-line traffic monitoring tools and SDN controllers (specifically, OpenDayLight) to enable traffic engineering techniques and improve QoE for users accessing real-time video streaming – “optimal/wise” placement of distributed SDN controllers in a large size network – software-controlled WiFi access networks to optimize the downlink/uplink bandwidth by exploiting load-balancing among neighboring access points, in the specific case of residential users with WiFi-equipped ADSL modems. Furthermore, we have also a strong expertise on on-line scheduling algorithms for resource allocation problems, which have been applied mostly to packet switching systems in the past. Finally, we have some expertise in energy-aware network design.
