Our developers have been involved in industrial projects for major mobile manufacturers and funded research projects dating back to 1999 and the first UMTS base station developed through the FP5 project.Regarding the pre-structuring model topic P8, our ambition is to explore our experiences and development potential in 3G and 4G mobile communications standard as well as recent experiences in wireless sensing networking, “Internet of Things” enablers in the context of Environmental monitoring, e-Health and Cyber security in evolving the 4G network architectures towards 5G one by integrating all the mentioned communication and networking technologies. We may offer direct research and development capabilities in pursuing applied research in those areas and performing technical validation testing of proposed 5G network enhancements. Our main interests in P8 are on mobility aspects, security, privacy / ID management and SDN/NFV methodologies.. Our ambition is also to enhancing mobile device capabilities as mobile routers, becoming active part of the overall 5G networking architecture and not remaining as mobile end-points only.

Scope of competence being offered: – Experience with implementing and testing 2G/3G/4G mobile networks and their components, based on available both open-source and commercial tools and solutions;
– Knowledge of mobile network operation, protocol analysis and diagnostic, and performance measurement procedures based on experience from both academic research and commercial projects.
– Contemporary mobile network’s packet switched domain is optimized as access network for internet and other services. With advent of M2M communication, this architecture becomes inefficient because M2M is less oriented towards internet access and more about direct communication between terminal equipment. Therefore we propose an update of overall network core architecture to facilitate more efficient communication between endpoint devices, so that the mobile network can support M2M services efficiently.

Scope of Proposal: Starting from a prototype implementation of the Evolved Packet Core, supporting LTE, as well as WiFi and legacy 2G/3G RANs, we are targeting the practical adaptations and implementation of the envisioned 5G Core Network elements. The scopes are to adapt first existing EPC architectures to the requirements of 5G radio. Then a practical testing and experimentation pre-product implementation will be executed, providing to the partners the realistic test-bed infrastructure. As potential interesting item would be the separation of control and user-data plane processing in the classical S/P-Gateway, towards SDN/NFV concepts, with the use of OpenFlow or similar protocols.
Resources needed: Core Network Dynamics can provide comprehensive test-bed functional elements for mobile broadband architectures. The OpenEPC includes support today for interconnecting 2G/3G/LTE and WiFi Radio Access Networks with generic IP applications as well as with integrated architectures (e.g. IMS). OpenEPC   requires to function radio base stations.

These two institutions will apply as a single legal entity where KTH will be the project partner and CNIT will serve as “third party” of the partner.
Scope of competence being offered: KTH and CNIT have a very close collaboration, which is reflected in a number of joint publications and by the exchange of students and researchers. Both institutions can leverage on their expertise on network design; access networks (including mobile convergence); open access for multi-operator environment; and techno-economics evaluations. Specifically related to the goals of this project we can offer a strong expertise in SDN-based control solutions and applications for core, metro, access, and heterogeneous networks, in addition to service-oriented architectures for next generation networks and context-aware computing and communication.Possible topics in which we can contribute to the project include:

  • Context-driven orchestration for optimized data and service delivery: we are currently working (also in the framework of IEEE NGSON standardization) in the context-aware service composition and delivery models, which include the negotiation of proper delivery paths and network services on behalf of application services (e.g., content delivery). In particular for P8 we could define and develop orchestration solutions for future 5G network scenarios aiming at network service delivery, which is adaptive to diverse contexts (e.g., user preferences, device capabilities) in order to maximize the user satisfaction while optimizing the use of services and network resources from different providers. Specifically, our contribution will comprise traffic engineering strategies for optimal network and application resource allocation, network programmability and automation of cross domain network configurations and service composition policies for virtualized network services and components.
  • Converged and flexible control plane: we are currently working (jointly with Ericsson Sweden) in the definition and the performance assessment of a programmable control plane architecture for a converged access/metro segment for future 5G network scenarios. In particular for P8 we could develop a flexible and programmable control plane solution ensuring service delivery enforcement in accordance with the results from the network service orchestration. Our work will comprise provisioning strategies able to create and maintain the correct flow of data among the proper sequence of network nodes and virtualized network services and components while ensuring the required QoS parameters (e.g., bandwidth, latency, jitter) across a convergent fixed and mobile network environment.
  • Implementation principles leveraging SDN and NFV methodology for an open service ecosystem over 5G networks:we are currently working (also in the framework of IETF standardization) in the definition of guidelines and implementation models enabling an open service ecosystem where different providers may cooperate to satisfy users’ ever changing requirements by composing and delivering application and network services dynamically. In particular for P8 we could define and develop implementation solutions based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that combined with NFV solutions and the SDN paradigm can address in a synergic and efficient way the composition of network services to meet specific data flow delivery requirements while promisingly enabling the convergence between network and application service delivery processes. Specifically, our contribution will comprise virtualized network function description model and dynamic service chaining solutions.

Scope of competence being offered: An increasing pervasiveness of portable devices as well as the emergence of new services has created critical control requirements, to assist a truly unified, and heterogeneous 5G system. Such a unified and scalable vision requires, in our opinion, a way to assist a direct exchange (release and relocation) of the most varied resources e.g. specific services (connectivity offloading, roaming); parameters (bandwidth, memory, or storage) above the 5G infrastructure (e.g. on a SDN, or across services).We are working on mechanisms that provide the grounds for such an exchange, e.g. adequate mapping of diverse types of resources; . sharing and relaying of resources, expected to assist aspects of fixed mobile convergence, such as offloading, traffic locality, energy efficiency.

Optare Solutions main expertise is in Fulfilment and Assurance areas inside the OSS systems of the operators to provide management of Telco Services and Resources. Scope of competence being offered: For content delivery, we are investigating device-to-device (D2D) based content delivery, in which the D2D communication serves as a “cell-tier” in the cellular network and contents can be cached by devices and distributed from the devices with caching to other devices. This D2D-based content delivery through distributed caching can efficiently localise the service, offload the traffic, reduce the E2E delay by taking D2D as the service broker and provide scalability. Currently, we are working on how to select devices for content caching and distribution according to the popularity of the contents. With the objective of satisfying the needs of the content and minimising the delay, the number and the location of the selected D2D devices for content caching and distribution are analysed in our work.
