Workshop on Security in Virtualised Networks co-chaired by 5G-Ensure in June 2016

9 June 2016 - 10 June 2016

The IEEE International Workshop on Security in Virtualized Networks (Sec-VirtNet 2016) will be held on June 10th, 2016 in Seoul (South Korea) along with the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft 2016). Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies fundamentally change the network architecture as well as the way networks (e.g., mobile or transport networks) will be deployed and operated. This new generation of virtualized and multi-tenant networks comes with various promises (e.g., CAPEX and OPEX optimization) but also raises several new security challenges, in particular because network functions will no longer be embedded and thus “protected” within network equipments. Besides, network virtualization also brings various opportunities for security such as the possibility to offer software-based security appliances or Security as a Service.

The Sec-VirtNet 2016 workshop focuses on novel research topics dealing with security in these virtualized networks. Submitted papers should provide theoretical or practical approaches to identify and address the critical security issues of such virtualized networks or, conversely, to exploit these promising virtualization and SDN technologies in order to offer innovative security services.

The workshop is co-chaired by Emmanuel Dotato (Thales France & member of the 5G PPP 5G-ENSURE project), to adverse more widely the invitation to submit papers to the Sec-VirtNet 2016 workshop in conjunction with the NetSoft conference.

About 5G-Ensure:
5G-ENSURE will define and deliver a 5G Security Architecture, shared and agreed by the various 5G stakeholders. It will specify, develop and release an initial set of useful and usable security enablers for 5G.

These enablers will be selected for their relevance in addressing some of the foremost security concerns in order to generate the trust and confidence necessary for 5G to be widely adopted and to deliver its promises through innovative business applications. The 5G-ENSURE project will also initiate a 5G Security testbed vision and initial set-up in which the security enablers will be made available. Moreover, the potential of the developed 5G Security enablers will be showcased and demonstrated in the context of carefully selected 5G security use cases (e.g. use cases related to cybersecurity and aerospace).

Coupled with this, 5G-ENSURE will be closely linked to the overall 5G PPP programme through active participation in common activities and fora. Specifically, 5G-ENSURE will be the project that creates and animates a dedicated 5G PPP Security Working Group to coordinate the various security-related activities.

5G-ENSURE is led by a strong consortium bringing together the appropriate and complementary skills, including standards involvement and deep telco understanding, along with an extensive network of interested parties, and have a proven track-record in coordination.

5G-ENSURE will avail itself of the support of a group of international opinion leaders.
Partners include: VTT Technical Research centre of Finland, THALES Services, Alenia Space & Communications & Security, ALCATEL-LUCENT BELL LABS France, B-COM, ERICSSON, University of Southampton, NEC Europe, NIXU, ORANGE, University of Oxford, SICS, Telecom Italia Information Technology, Trust-it services.
