ICT 2015 (http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/ict2015-innovate-connect-transform-lisbon-20-22-october-2015) took place in Lisbon on October 20-22, 2015. It gathered 5,748 participants that attended the main conference, the several workshops, the exhibitions and the various networking sessions this event offered.
The 5G PPP initiative and many of its key players were actively participating to ICT2015 in several ways:
- A 5G PPP exhibition stand, just beside the EC Village, was animated by the 5G PPP projects’ representatives and coordinated by the EURO-5G team. At the stand, information about the ongoing projects and some selected demos were presented.
The 5G PPP Session “European Leadership in 5G – How to participate in phase 2?” took place on the second day of the ICT 2015 event. The purpose of this session was to give an overview of the progress being achieved in phase one of the 5G PPP and then outline the opportunities for participating in the upcoming phase two.- The opening focused on the achievements of phase one so far and presented the 5G-Infrastructure-Association (5G IA) view on the vital work that needs to be undertaken in phase two. This view will be supported by reference to the “5G IA vision for 5G” document and a “pre-structuring model”, prepared and published by the 5G IA, which will provide a mapping of the 5G challenges in the 2016-2017 H2020 work programme to potential research areas as a basis for the preparation of the next wave of 5G PPP project proposals.
- The 2nd 5G Verticals Workshop (5G: Serving Vertical Industries) which will take place in Brussels, 9 November 2015, was also announced (see https://5g-ppp.eu/registration-for-2nd-5g-vertical-workshop/).
- The paper brochure prepared by EURO-5G presenting the ongoing 5G PPP projects was also made available at ICT 2015 at the 5G PPP booth and on the EC booth. 1,000 copies were distributed during the event. The brochure is available at https://5g-ppp.eu/5g-ppp-phase-1-projects/
- The first 5G Multilateral Workshop between Regional Initiatives on 5G Spectrum and Standards was held on October 20 in conjunction with ICT 2015.
Several H2020 projects were present on the 5G PPP booth, including 5G NORMA, FANTASTIC-5G, X-Haul, METIS-II, mmMAGIC and EURO-5G.
5G NORMA successfully re-presented 5G-PPP at ICT2015 together with other Horizon 2020 projects. 5G-NORMA showed its vision and showcased a video which illustrates its envisioned Proof of Concept. The video, available at https://goo.gl/hGfa8H, shows how 5G-NORMA will impact different key aspects of the future 5G networks such as the increase in the mobile data volume, support for flexibility and diverse services, and reduced service creation time. The video, broadcast during the three days of the event on a HD screen, gathered the attention of many visitors interested in both the project contents and its role within the 5G PPP portfolio.
METIS-II presented its visualization platform. Professional “Serious Game Engineering” concepts and tools are used to visualise the use case scenarios, the achievable network capabilities and features, and the individual benefit of 5G that a user can experience.
FANTASTIC-5G revealed its vision and latest results on 5G use cases to be supported by a New Air Interface within the 5GPPP booth during ICT 2015. The technical manager of FANTASTIC-5G, Berna Sayrac (ORANGE), represented the project and explained the approach to the many visitors.
mmMAGIC was showcased in two days at the 5G PPP booth during ICT 2015 Conference in Lisbon, receiving great interest from an international audience attending the conference. The project was also highlighted at the first 5G Multilateral Workshop between Regional Initiatives on 5G Spectrum and Standards which was held on October 20 in conjunction with ICT 2015.
