MoU signed between 5GAA and 6G-IA

The 5G Automotive Association and the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a result of their mutual interest in strengthening the liaison between EU-funded projects on V2X and Connected and Automated Driving (CAD) with the relevant industry players, along with their wish to ensure the successful exploitation of V2X and CAD EU-funded project results.

The 6G-IA is the voice of European Industry and Research for next-generation networks and services. Its primary objective is to contribute to Europe’s leadership on 5G, 5G evolution and SNS/6G research. This aim brings together a global industry community of telecoms and digital actors, such as operators, manufacturers, research institutes, associations, universities, verticals, and SMEs. The 6G-IA carries out a wide range of activities in strategic areas, including standardisation, frequency spectrum, R&D projects, technology skills, collaboration with key vertical industry sectors —notably for the development of trials— and international cooperation. It represents the private sector in both the 5G Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), where the European Commission represents the public side.

5GAA, on the other hand, is a global cross-industry organisation of companies from the automotive, technology, and telecommunications industries (ICT). The association’s objectives are to develop, test and promote cellular technology-based communications solutions, initiate their standardisation, and accelerate their commercial availability and global market penetration to address society’s connected mobility and road safety needs.

Under this MoU, both parties agreed to cooperate for the benefit of the connected and automated mobility sector and society as a whole.

5G-TOURS main results and achievements
5G-TOURS concluded after 3 years of fruitful collaboration, which resulted in the achievement of the objectives set and overcoming challenges, primarily its development almost always during the pandemic. 5G-TOURS deployed full end-to-end trials to bring 5G to real users for thirteen representative use cases. The project provided efficient and reliable close-to commercial services for tourists, citizens, and patients in three different types of cities:

  • Rennes, France, the safe city where e-health use cases were demonstrated.
  • Turin, Italy, the touristic city focused on media and broadcast use cases.
  • Athens, Greece, the mobility-efficient city that brings 5G to users in motion as well as to transport-related service providers.

In Turin, 5G-TOURS deployed three use cases dedicated to tourists:

  • UC 1 – Augmented tourism experience – This use case is focused on the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality technology. It provides visitors of targeted museums with an improved and more engaging experience based on the use of an augmented reality inside and outside the Palazzo Madama Museum concerning virtual reality technology.
  • UC 2 – Telepresence – This use case provides the possibility for a robot located inside the museum to be controlled by a remote user by exploiting an underlying 5G network capable of meeting the stringent KPIs necessary for effective robot control and low latency high quality video stream.
  • UC 3 – Robot-assisted Museum guide and monitoring – This use case leverages the use of robotic technology to provide an enhanced museum visit experience. This guided tour is performed autonomously by the robot following a predefined path. In this use case the humanoid robot R1 is used to carry out a guided tour.

In Rennes, 5G-TOURS deployed four health-driven use cases:

  • UC6 – Health monitoring and incident driven communications prioritization – This use case addresses solutions for remote health monitoring of people, especially patients with a critical and/or chronic disease. This involves remote health monitoring technology /services and reliable / timely technology /services to notify relevant care professionals and family members in case of detected health deterioration and/or acute care needs.
  • UC7 – Teleguidance for diagnostics and intervention support – This use case shows the importance of providing care as early as possible, before the arrival at the hospital, to prevent irreversible deterioration and save the life of critical patients. Ultrasound diagnostics at the incident site are needed to decide what to do and start the right treatment directly. Teleguidance by a remote expert proved to be of vital importance in this case, requiring reliable low latency communication of audio, high resolution video and ultrasound images.
  • UC8 – Wireless Operating Room – The goal of the use case is to demonstrate the impact of 5G inside the operating room. Among other things, advantages are that wireless imaging devices are easier to install, connect and synchronize with other imaging equipment and easier to keep sterile. This use case will face low latency and high reliability requirements in addition to a significant amount of video data to be transferred in real-time.
  • UC9 – Optimal ambulance routing – This use case addresses real time navigation of an ambulance, both to the site of the emergency, to ensure that medical help will be provided as quickly as possible, as well as from the incident site to the hospital. This will prevent loss of time due to e.g., traffic, road works/blocks as much as possible. The goal is to improve the overall health outcome for the patient by minimizing the time-to-care.

In Athens, 5G-TOURS also deployed four use cases, dedicated to the transportation sector:

  • UC 10 – Smart airport parking management – In this use case, parking users at the airport obtain real time information on available and occupied spaces through 5G-enabled parking sensors. They can locate available parking spaces directly through a mobile application and are guided there via the optimal route. This use case involves large throughputs, low latencies, and high capacity, which represents an essential functionality of the 5G family technology.
  • UC 11 – Video-Enhanced ground-based moving vehicles – This use case provides high-definition cameras to the follow-me vehicles which lead aircrafts to parking positions, monitor and oversee the activity at the Airport Airside area, and attend incidents, emergencies, and critical events, thus improving day-to-day airport operations as well as response activities to emergencies. This use case involves very large throughputs as well as highly critical communications.
  • UC 12 – Emergency airport evacuation – This use case focuses on the evacuation of the airport in a quick and organized fashion in case of an emergency, providing automated guidance of emergency routes from the affected area up to the muster areas. This use case focuses on the location accuracy part of 5G technology. The application relies on AR technology suitable for training exercises and simulations at the airport.
  • UC 13 – Excursion on an Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR)-enhanced bus – This use case focuses on school students travelling to a destination of educational interest, generating good quality digital learning experiences both during the transportation to the destination and the visit of the exhibition, involving large throughputs and low latencies in highly mobile environments.

Seven 5G PPP projects @ 7th Workshop on “5G – Putting Intelligence to the Network Edge” (5GPINE 2022) 
The 7th Workshop on “5G – Putting Intelligence to the Network Edge” (5GPINE 2022) took place in Crete, Greece on June 17-20.

It was held in conjunction with the recent 18th Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 2022) International Conference, under the organizational framework of the Smart5Grid project and by the supervision and the coordination of OTE. The 5G-PINE 2022 Workshop was a joint effort for the dissemination of research-based results as well as for the exchange of knowledge between several H2020 EU-funded projects.

In more detail, three 5G PPP projects (Smart5Grid, 5G-ERA and MARSAL) and one MCSA-RISE EU-funded project (i.e.: RECOMBINE) joined their effort towards creating the core context so that to “attract” participation of other projects as well. Smart5Grid project’s partner OTE, was responsible for the organization of the entire Workshop. Thirteen papers were presented and discussed interactively in three distinct sessions, promoting progress originating from seven ongoing 5G PPP projects (Smart5Grid, 5G-ERA, MARSAL, 5G!Drones, LOCUS, 5G-COMPLETE &Int5Gent), two H2020 projects emphasizing also on 5G aspects (RECOMBINE, DataPorts) and one national Spanish project (ARTIST).

Collaboration links and “paths” for exchanging knowledge between the participating projects (especially between Smart5Grid and 5G-ERA, as both belong in the same ICT-41 Call) could be established.

Dr. Ioannis Chochliouros from OTE (also 5G-PINE Program Chair) presented a synergetic Smart5Grid paper where several features of the project architecture were discussed and further assessed.

In the same framework, Mr. Michalis Rantopoulos from OTE also presented a second synergetic paper discussing the context and the progress of two Smart5Grid uses cases related to the Bulgarian pilot and the joint Greek-Bulgarian pilot.

The Workshop organizational process has also been supported by the Smart5Grid Project Coordinator, Mr. Daniele Porcu from ENEL.

Many European projects @ Virtual ICT-52 Workshop on 6G organised by Hexa-X
The workshop was organised back in February 2022 by the European 6G Flagship project Hexa-X together with other ICT-52 6G projects: the European projects HEXA-X, REINDEER, TeraFlow, 6G-BRAINS, MARSAL, DAEMON, COREnect, AI@EDGE, RISE-6G and B5G-OPEN took part in the workshop.

Among others, Mikko Uusitalo, from Nokia Bell Labs gave the European vision for the 6G Network Ecosystem and draw key conclusions:

  • 6G will play a key role for societies of the future, with applications merging the digital, physical, and personal domains (examples: holographic telepresence and AR/VR)
  • Global standards and renewed regulations shall play a key role in the development and deployment of 6G Societal, policy and business drivers for 6G
  • AI/ML mechanisms will become crucial elements
  • Reusing universal infrastructure is required to provide more diversified services and achieve the increased sustainability awareness
  • 6G Trials and Testbeds could start in 2028 and last until 2030 when 6G products could made available

Mikko Uusitalo also shared his key recommendations:

  • 6G networks will grow in complexity exponentially -> challenges for security, identity validation, lawful interception, forensic analysis etc. New regulations and Ethic principles needed to address certification and litigation in the whole chain
  • Additional spectrum needed for both terrestrial and NTN systems, including traditional MNOs and other actors (companies, research institutions, ..)
  • 6G offers opportunities to new players in the ecosystem due to the need for combination and integration of more components. Regulation in Europe could help new players to emerge and to make sure that sovereignty and security requirements are met
  • An opportunity for Digital Sobriety, with moderation when producing and consuming services, materials, or energy.
  • New professional skills addressing communication protocols and software, cybersecurity, microelectronics, quality-testing-certification technologies, AI/ML with focus on gender balance
  • To compete with future’s 6G enabled products in defence, automotive, white goods, industrial machinery, consumer goods, etc, Europe needs a world-class competence resource pool in wireless and wireline communications, microelectronics (at least in design), photonics, and software in industry as well as in academia, strengthen by a proactive Regulation adaptation to create strategic and business opportunities for EU companies.

SCoDIHNet monthly activity report
The Smart Connectivity Digital Innovation Hub Network (SCoDIHNet) has performed a number of activities in July-August 2022 among those, we can highlight the following ones:

  • Cooperation with African DIHs together with the 5 ICT58 projects funded under the Horizon 2020 program. A MoU has been finalised and agreed by the 6G-IA board, it will be signed soon and active from September with the organisation of a webinar with a specific focus on Smart Connectivity
  • Cooperation with the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) in order to promote 5GPPP project results and facilitate replicability at regional level. A MoU has been finalised and validated by the 6G-IA board, it will be signed soon and active in September with a first action that will target the completion of our catalogue mapping Smart Connectivity Technology providers (SMEs) with the DIHs with EEN members.
  • SCoDIHNet is contributing to the OPEN DEI Think Tank which has the objective to define a common data model for all verticals in order to facilitate information exchanges avoiding silos.

Progress Monitoring Report (PMR) 2021
The 5G PPP Annual Progress Monitoring 2021 (PMR 2021) reports the progress achieved by the 5G Public-Private Partnership (5G PPP) during 2021. It also presents the activities that were performed in the framework of the 5G PPP in 202 by the 5G Initiative (i.e., 5G PPP Projects, 5G PPP working groups, Steering and Technology Boards), the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association 6G-IA  (i.e., Verticals Engagement Task Force, 5G IA working groups and specific activities) and the European Commission.

5G-MOBIX final event

Workshop on 6G KPI and how to measure them

Workshop description

The 5G PPP Test Measurement and KPI Validation work group (TMV WG) invites you to join a workshop to reflect on 6G KPIs and how to measure them.

Before EUCNC, the 5G PPP TMV released a white paper on “Beyond 5G/6G KPIs and Target Values”  based on input from 5G PPP ICT-52-2020 (ICT-52) projects. In this paper, KPIs from the ICT-52 projects were collected, described, and related to existing 5G KPIs. Where available, the target values for 6G were provided.

In the paper, the KPIs were clustered in KPI families based on type and the area that the KPI concerns. As most of the ICT-52 projects were in an early stage at the time of the paper creation, some of the KPI definitions and the target values and measurement techniques were often not fully defined.

The target of this workshop is to discuss the KPI definitions and which measurement techniques exist to monitor them. The workshops also intend to identify potential support for the ICT-52 projects. The workshop will also be the kick-off of the next iteration of the white paper on “Beyond 5G/6G KPIs and Target Values” where the aim is to further refine target values and the measurement techniques, again based on input from the ICT-52 projects and the 5GPPP TMV working group.

We invite all participants to inform us if they would like to contribute to the workshop by September 9th.

We call for contributions from researchers working in the areas of network systems, applied machine learning and data science. All submissions should contribute to the common goal of making AI a viable and native technology for mobile networks.
