Global expansion of COVID-19 is affecting people life and has major impact on overall individuals and organizations operation. Among many others issues, in direct connection to travels bans and overall restrictions/confinement measures… many conferences, events and meetings are either cancelled (e.g. MWC 2020), shifted to Fall 2020 (NGMN) or organized in remote/”virtual” mode (5GForum, EuCNC).
Smart IoT London |
||
The Smart IoT 2020 is part of the largest tech event in the UK, co-located with Cloud Expo Europe, Big Data World, Blockchain World, Data Centre World and Cyber Security. The 2020 edition took place at ExCel London on March 12-13. Smart IoT signposts how connecting things drives business value from connecting people, process, data and things.
On Day Two of Smart IoT London, a panel discussion evaluated the state of the “5G Gold Rush”. The panel examined whether the potential of 5G has been oversold to businesses. The panel had an in-depth look at how 5G will impact verticals, and at applications and use cases where 5G will be the most helpful Dr. Colin Willcock, chairman of the 5G infrastructure Association participated in the panel and shared a presentation. He stressed the fact that the 5G PPP has been a clear success for Europe, including the UK, with thousands of researchers and developers across Europe successfully working on innovative solutions for the definition of 5G. He also mentioned that these efforts have had a significant effect on the current 5G standards, especially in the areas of system design, evaluation aspects, air interface innovations, network management, security innovation, virtualisation and service deployment innovations. He got very good feedback from the audience. |

5Growth video |
||
The vision of the 5Growth project is to empower verticals industries such as Industry 4.0, Transportation, and Energy with an AI-driven Automated and Sharable 5G End-to-End Solution that will allow these industries to achieve simultaneously their respective key performance targets. Towards this vision, 5Growth will automate the process for supporting diverse industry verticals through (i) a vertical portal in charge of interfacing verticals with the 5G End-to-End platforms, receiving their service requests and building the respective network slices on top, (ii) closed-loop automation and SLA control for vertical services lifecycle management and (iii) AI-driven end-to-end network solutions to jointly optimize Access, Transport, Core and Cloud, Edge and Fog resources, across multiple technologies and domains.
The main objective of 5Growth is the technical and business validation of 5G technologies from the verticals’ points of view, following a field-trial-based approach on vertical sites (TRL 6-7). Multiple use cases of vertical industries (Comau, Efacec_S, Efacec_E, Innovalia) will be field-trialed on four vertical-owned sites in close collaboration with the vendors (Ericsson, Interdigital, NEC, Nokia) and the operators (Altice, Telecom Italia, Telefonica) in the project. 5Growth will leverage on the results of 5G-PPP Phase 2 projects where slicing, virtualization and multi-domain solutions for the creation and provisioning of vertical services are being developed and validated, e.g. 5G-TRANSFORMER and 5G-MONARCH. Two ICT-17-2018 5G End-to-End platforms, 5G EVE and 5G-VINNI, have been selected for the Trials to demonstrate the 5Growth specific vertical use cases. In addition to the impact on vertical-oriented standards (e.g., EN50126 (IEC62278) for railway signaling), the verticals in the consortium will be offered an opportunity to influence ongoing 5G standardization by leveraging the involvement of leading experts in the various relevant SDOs. The 5Growth project released a new overview video on YouTube. Have a look here. |

Pre-Structuring Model Survey |
||
To assist participants in Calls for proposals of the 5G Infrastructure PPP, the Pre-Structuring Model (PSM) Working Group (WG which is currently a sub-group of the 5G-IA Vision WG) produced a Pre-Structuring Model (PSM) for each Phase of the PPP, suggesting how a coherent portfolio of projects could address the future calls. This intended as guidance for proposers.
As the latest PPP Calls are now almost over (latest Call for Proposals have deadline in June 2020, shifted from April due to COVID-19 impacts), a specific analysis is being conducted by the PSM WG (supported by the FULL5G CSA project) to analyze the key lessons learnt related to the PSM, including the analysis of the mapping between the projects portfolios in the different PPP Phases and the respective proposed PSMs, the added value for the community and the points for potential improvement and recommendations for forthcoming Horizon Europe (HEU) Partnerships. We are now asking for your inputs on some key questions that will help the WG to fully qualify and quantify the lessons learnt. Thanks in advance for taking 15-20 minutes to answer the following questions before Friday 08.05.20 @ 17:00 CEST. |

Webinar “3GPP Progress so far – Industry Verticals and Releases 16 and 17” |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Webinar – May 5, 11:00-12:00 CEST In this webinar, 3GPP TSG (Technical Specification Group) chairs will guide participants through the status of Releases 16, 17 and 18, highlighting Rel-17 work related to verticals. They will offer a practical guide on how to join 3GPP and best impact on-going work. In the Q&A with the TSG Chairs, webinar participants will get the chance to ask their own questions about 3GPP processes, timelines and services supporting industry verticals, as well as how they can leverage the long-standing expertise of traditional 3GPP specialists from the telecom industry. In the second part, participants will get first-hand experiences from industry verticals representatives that have already contributed to 5G standardisation. These champions will be bouncing questions to the TSG chairs, such as removing barriers to entry, easing the tacking of technical and common requirements, performing gap analysis and forming interest groups to speed up the time to consensus. This Q&A session will also feature answers to any burning questions from the audience with live polls moderated by 5GAA CTO, Maxime Flament. Register with this link: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_2cLXVVR5SzSeMdEFrgAMNQ This webinar is part of a series co-hosted by a sub-set of 3GPP MRPs, namely 5G-IA, 5GAA, 5G-ACIA and PSCE, who are committed to helping sector specialists contribute to 5G standardisation in a global context. This goal is achieved by driving standardisation efforts within their respective associations, understanding the needs of new verticals and finding ways to integrate them in 3GPP activities. IEEE ICC 5G LTE-IC 2020 CfP |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dublin, June 7-11, 2020
ICC WS-04: 5G LTE-IC 2020 5G-DRIVE is organising a workshop on 5G Long Term Evolution and Intelligent Communication in conjunction with IEEE ICC 2020 and has published a CfP. (http://info.ee.surrey.ac.uk/CCSR/IWSDN/) Workshop Scope: The next generation wireless networks, i.e., 5G and beyond, autonomous vehicle networks, will be extremely dynamic and complex due to the ultra-densely deployed wireless networks. These introduce many critical challenges for signal processing, network planning and operation, network management etc. Meanwhile, generation and consumption of wireless data are becoming increasingly distributed with ongoing paradigm shift from people-centric to machine-oriented communications, making the operation of future wireless networks even more complex. To mitigate the complexity of future wireless network operation, new approaches of intelligently utilizing distributed computational resources with improved context-awareness becomes extremely important. In this regard, the edge computing architecture aiming to distribute computing, storage, control, communication, and networking functions closer to end uses, have a great potential for enabling efficient operation of future wireless networks. Such promising architectures make the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) principles, which incorporate learning, reasoning and decision-making mechanism, as natural choices for designing a tightly integrated network. |
