5G International Cooperation and SME participation in full swing!
The European Commission strongly supports international cooperation and seeks for a global consensus on 5G in the development of globally accepted standards and spectrum requirements. To-Euro-5G reports.
The year 2016 ended with MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) signed with 5G Americas, the Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5GMF) in Japan, 5G Forum (South Korea), IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group (China) and the 5G-Infrastructure Association Public Private Partnership (5G-IA 5G PPP). Partnerships were also sealed in Asia, Russia and North America.
Additionally, the parties agreed to jointly organise “Global 5G Events” in the coming years to focus their efforts and leadership. Global 5G Events are held twice a year in rotation.
The inaugural Global 5G Event took place on May 31st and June 1st, 2016 in Beijing (China) under the responsibility of IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group (“Building 5G Technology Ecosystem”). The second Global 5G Event was held on November 9-10 in Rome (Italy), under the responsibility of the 5G Infrastructure Association (“Enabling the 5G EcoSphere”).
2017
2017 was again a fruitful year. A MoU between 5G-IA and Telebrasil – “Projecto 5G Brasil” – to foster industrial collaboration on 5G development was sealed at the MWC’17 (March 2017). Cooperation amplified with the extension of the Multilateral MoU to Brazil, officially signed at the 3rd Global 5G Event in May 2017 in Tokyo. The MoU between 5G-IA and 5G Brasil in short followed the Joint Declaration by the European Commission and the Brazilian government at MWC’16.
The 3rd Global 5G Event was organised by 5GMF in Tokyo on May 24th and May 25th. The 4th Global 5G Event has just ended in Seoul (South Korea). It took place from November 22th to November 24th, 2017. The 4th Global 5G Event (“5G, Accelerating The 4th Industrial Revolution”) ended with a 5G day field trial site tour of the Winter 2018 Olympics venue in PeyongChang.
The upcoming 5th Global 5G Event will be organised by 5G Americas. 5G New Horizons Wireless Symposium will be held on May 16th and May 17th, 2018 in Austin, TX, USA. The Symposium is co-located with both 5G North America and BCE at the Austin Convention Center.
At last, the 5G‑IA was also successfully accepted as Market Representation Partner (MRP) of the 3GPP in October 2016, and signed a cooperation agreement with ETSI in April 2017, as well as with the CEPT/ECC in June 2017.
SME participation in 5G
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have an important role to play in developing, piloting and deploying 5G technologies, both to help with disruptive technologies and to address the needs of various vertical sectors.
SME participation in 5G is primarily supported by NetWorld2020 and the 5G Infrastructure Association, assisted by the To-Euro-5G project.
The SME Working Group was created at the beginning of the 5G PPP with the main objective of increasing exposure and visibility of SME expertise in 5G. As a result, SME participation in 5G PPP has been increasing since the inception of the programme. In 5G PPP Call 1 projects, 29 % of beneficiaries were SMEs. In call 2, 31% of the new beneficiaries are SMEs. Moreover, the objective of the 5G PPP to reach 20% participation is on the verge of being reached (±19% so far, with a good progression from Phase 1 to Phase 2 i.e. ±17% in Phase 1 and ±22% in Phase 2). Let’s all work together to continue this positive trend with the upcoming Phase 3!
“One of the challenges we are facing in SMEs is to make our expertise and skills known to larger organisations. With the SME Working Group, we are trying our best to simplify the life of large organisations looking for expertise, while increasing the visibility of SMEs. We have come up with a “Find the SME you need!” web page specifically dedicated to 5G, making the search for the most relevant SMEs as straightforward as possible in a given context (e.g. a 5G PPP Call, bilateral collaboration, etc.).” Jacques Magen, To-Euro-5G/InterInnov, Chair of the SME Working Group.
Since its inception, the SME Working Group has become the voice of the NetWorld2020 and 5G SME community, as well as the networking place for the SME telecoms community.
The “Find the SME you need!” web page highlights competence, skills and business relations of SMEs in the 5G domain, on also contains SME relation and expertise with Business Verticals. The 5G Infrastructure Association has identified five vertical sectors where 5G may have a critical impact (the corresponding white papers can be downloaded here).

In addition, SMEs are classified by the business vertical in the “Find the SME you need!” web page.

In addition, the “Find the SME you need!” web page now also contains some SME success stories, which were collected to identify SME expertise and innovation in 5G, and to better understand what SMEs had already achieved in 5G projects. Although they come only from a few SMEs, they show how much SMEs can bring to 5G projects and 5G solutions.
A dedicated “SME Expertise and Skills in the 5G domain” brochure was released about one year ago and was disseminated at all major 5G events including the Global 5G Events, the Mobile World Congress, and EuCNC. This brochure aims at showing the expertise and skills from selected European SMEs in 5G and related domains. It is complementary to the web site.
Have a look at the latest presentation on SMEs that was given on 9 November at the ICT Proposers’ Day in Budapest.
The next MWC will be again a major promotion opportunity for 5G PPP projects. 5G-IA and 5G PPP participation are on going. A stand has been booked in Hall 7. Videos from 5G PPP projects will be displayed; paper brochures will also be available there.
More information disclosed later as the organisation progresses. If you are a 5G PPP project wishing to participate/help, do not hesitate to contact Jacques Magen (To-Euro-5G/InterInnov), jmagen@interinnov.eu.

Porto, Portugal – June 3rd
6th International Workshop in conjunction with VTC’18 Spring
“Cloud Technologies and Energy Efficiency in Mobile Communication Networks”
In this 2018 edition, a particular emphasis to edge cloud, MEC and vertical segments will be given, due to the growing interest of these topics toward 5G networks.
The ONE5G project focuses on boosting the capacity of mobile networks, improving their energy efficiency and enabling a variety of new vertical use cases in dense urban areas as well as in rural environments. ONE5G has received eight million Euros in funding from the European Commission under the EU’s “Horizon 2020” initiative to drive research that enables a swift move towards 5G NR and advance digitization.
The 5G CHAMPION “5G Communication with a Heterogeneous, Agile Mobile network in the PyeongChang Winter Olympic competition” Project develops key enabling technologies for a proof-of-concept environment to be showcased at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea. This will allow maximum visibility for the available technology two years ahead of 2020, i.e. the official launch of 5G. 5G-CHAMPION is led by CEA-LETI on the EU side and by ETRI on the South Korean side.
Several workshops focusing on 5G. Several 5G PPP projects involved.
A main 5G workshop approaching the last innovations and research activities in 5G PPP is organised:
