5G IANA Webinar: Tutorial with hands-on showcasing: nApp Onboarding and 5G-IANA platform capabilities

On 4 December 2023, 5G IANA released the video of its last webinar “Tutorial with hands-on showcasing: nApp Onboarding and 5G-IANA platform capabilities”. The organization presented a systematic and engaging experiment, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in onboarding and deploying nApps, along with a thorough exploration of the remarkable capabilities of the platform. The session featured clear, step-by-step instructions and real-world demonstrations, enabling attendees to not only grasp the fundamental concepts but also develop proficiency in leveraging the platform’s full potential.

Final AI@EDGE workshop
On 13 December 2023, the AI@EDGE final workshop took place online. The event started with an overview of Safran Passenger Innovations’ activities and business by Leonardo Goratti (SPI), followed by an introduction to the AI@EDGE project by Irene Facchin (FBK).

Subsequently, there were three presentations focusing on use cases (UC), UC2 (Daniel Reti), UC3 (Miguel Rosa Serván), and UC4 (Babak Mafakheri), presenting their respective final results. In the afternoon session, the core partners of UC4 provided insights into their technologies and their integration within the UC4 testbed, through presentations from Javier Palomares Torrecilla (i2CAT), Justin Tallon (SRS), Nicola di Pietro (HPE), and Phung Chi-Dung (CNAM). The day concluded with a tour of the Safran Passenger Innovations R&T lab, where visitors had the opportunity to explore the final setup of the AI@EDGE UC4 and assess the performance of its various components.

VITAL-5G, SMART5GRID, EVOLVED-5G and 5G-ERA @INFOCOM 2023

On 14 December 2023, the 25th InfoCom World Conference took place in Athens, Greece. The conference was at the crossroads of the past, present and future, as it marks 30 years of mobile telephony in Greece. The 2nd day (15 December) was dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, highlighting its most important aspects, the value of its applications, and the effect it now has on all vertical markets.

VITAL-5G

George Tsiouris (OTE), Makis Stamatelatos (DIA), and Panagiotis Demestichas (WINGS-ICT) represented VITAL-5G, presenting the project during Session 9 on 5G Innovative Actions for Vertical Sectors with 3rd Party Services. Additionally, both OTE and WINGS-ICT hosted booths, engaging with attendees to discuss the latest technological developments within the project and to connect with 3rd party experimenters.

SMART5GRID

Smart5Grid partners organized a special session “entitled 5G in the Smart Grid – The Innovative View of the Smart5Grid EU-funded Project” It was a hybrid event when partners from OTE, ENEL, NearBy Computing and Entra Energy are demonstrating the achievements of projects.

5G-ERA

5G-ERA was presented at the Research-oriented Workshop titled “Modern Research and Development Projects: Creating the Pillar for Investment and Innovations in the ICT Converged (Vertical) Markets”. Christina Lessi presented about “Robotic Systems in 5G Environment” while Guillem Gari Zanon presented about “Autonomous Robots’ Applications and Systems” during Session 9 of the Workshop titled “5G Innovative Actions for Vertical Sectors with Third Party Services”.

5GMED, 5G-ROUTES, 5GRAIL and 5G-BLUEPRINT Joint-Webinar

On 14 December, the “Key outputs from the ICT-53 projects in deploying 5G in cross-border corridors scenarios” webinar took place online. Participants from 5GMED, 5G-ROUTES, 5GRAIL and 5G-BLUEPRINT talked about the achievements, outputs, and strategic plans of projects shaping the future of 5G deployment in cross-border corridors in Europe.

SMART5GRID Project Final Event

The Smart5Grid project is quickly approaching to its conclusion. The final event is scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium on 9 April 2024. The event will showcase how the 5G based cloud-edge computing supported the implementation of the project’s four real-life demonstrators to minimize the latency and fostering the implementation of Network Applications for the Energy industry.

At IEEE CCNC 2024 (6 to 9 January 2024), Professor Johann Marquez-Barja from imec presented his project paper, “Showcasing 5G SA Experimentation Capabilities for Vertical Industries” which delved into the Vital-5G platform and third-party experimentation.

EVOLVED-5G @ CSCN 2023

At IEEE CSCN 2023 (6-8 November 2023) in Munich, Germany. George Makropoulos from NCSR “DEMOKRITOS” presented the projects’ papers entitled “Exploiting Core Openness as Native-AI Enabler for Optimized UAV Flight Path Selection” and “A Chatbot Assistant for Optimizing the Fault Detection and Diagnostics of Industry 4.0 Equipment in the 6G era”.

SCoDIHNet monthly news

The Smart Connectivity DIH Network has mainly worked on the following topics

1/  SCoDIHNet is now running since 4 years and it is time to clean up our membership as a number of organisations are no more active and representatives are not still involved in DIH activities. End of 2023, 93 organisations are registered and a survey has been put in place in order to check their relevance to the SCoDIHNet activities.

2/ SCoDIHNet has established a number of cooperations and offers a number of services to DIHs, after several years of operation, there is a willingness to clean this list in order to focus of the most important services expected my members. A survey has been put in place in order to collect the 5 key services among the 33 existing services.

3/ An updated version of the SCoDIHNet flyer describing in 2 pages the activities has been developed in order to help people to better understand the role of the initiative.

4/ Collection of replicable use cases/solutions is still going one with the SNS JU call 1 projects, they will complement the existing catalogue when developed and experimented in real conditions. The vertical tracker put in place by the SNS OPS projects is helping to identify these use cases/solutions.

ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference – Call for Demonstrations and Posters Open

The ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference: Status, Implementation and Way Forward of AI Standardization, is place face to face on 5-7 February 2024 in ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, France.

Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) technology has made major advancements in recent years and is becoming a key enabler for new disruptive features and applications in any digital product.

The ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference will focus on AI/ML from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) perspective.

The conference programme will cover topics such as new technological trends in the field of AI/ML, related standardization activities in ETSI and other Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), AI/ML regulation in Europe (European AI Act) and world-wide, implementation of AI/ML regulation with the help of standards, and related impact on product design and conformity assessment for market access. Demonstrations and posters on the latest advances in the field of AI/ML applied to ICT systems and applications will complement the conference programme.

European Research and Innovation Days (R&I Days) 2024

Brussels, Belgium – 20 – 21 March, 2024

The European Commission’s annual flagship R&I event brings together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and the public to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond.

This fifth edition of the event will take place on 20 and 21 March 2024 both physically in Brussels and online, allowing everyone to get involved from anywhere.

The R&I Days 2024 will give the opportunity to discover successful EU-funded research and innovation projects, experience their impact on our society and to debate the importance of continued investment in research and innovation. It will celebrate the outcomes and achievements in research and innovation since the launch of the first R&I Framework Programme over 40 years ago.

Information on Horizon Europe, including the Strategic Plan 2025 – 2027 and its Widening Instrument; R&I support to Green and Digital transition; its Global Approach; and many other topics will be disclosed.

ETSI Conference on Non Terrestrial Networks

Sophia Antipolis, France – 3 – 4 April, 2024

The ETSI Conference on “Non-Terrestrial Networks, a Native Component of 6G” will take place face-to-face on 3-4 April 2024 in ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, France. The conference is co-organized with the ESA , 6G-IA and the SNS-JU.

  • The event will foster discussions on the following topics:
  • Targeted use cases that will be enabled by NTN in 6G
  • Possible 6G architecture frameworks (including interfaces) enabling the native integration of the NTN components
  • Candidate technologies/features for NTN in 6G
  • Standardization approach (e.g. what, where, when) for NTN in 6G

Additionally, the event will be an opportunity for research organizations (academia and industrial research) to discuss new trends and features in the field of NTN solutions in the perspective of standardization.

Posters from the latest projects in the field NTN / satellite / 6G technologies may be provided to complement the conference programme.

EuCNC and 6GSummit

The 2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC, in its 33rd edition of a series, supported by the European Commission; the 6G Summit, in its 6th edition, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area.

Scope and overview

MedComNet 2024 will take place from the 11th to the 13th of June 2024 in Nizza, France.

MedComNet is a forum for the presentation of new research results in the broad area of wired and wireless communication and computer networking. All aspects of the networking research area are welcome.

This year’s theme will be “Networking in the AI era”, with the aim of discussing the necessary steps in research for developing next generation networks that can orchestrate, share, process or explain AI in order to contribute to a more sustainable, fair, secured and equal access to AI technologies.

Accepted papers will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore. Extended versions of the best papers presented at the conference will be considered, by invitation and upon additional review, for publication in the Elsevier Computer Networks journal.

The best paper in the conference will be awarded the Mario Gerla Best Paper Award.

Instructions for authors

Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research related to the aforementioned topics of interest. All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in standard IEEE 2-column format. Only Adobe PDF files will be accepted for the review process.

Further instructions (including the submission link) will be published on the website.

Two different categories of papers:

  • Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to ten (10) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding ten (10) pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all.
  • Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and they will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference.

IEEE PIMRC 2024 CALL FOR PAPERS – WORKSHOP PROPOSALS EXTENSION

The 35th edition of the annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) will be held in Valencia, Spain from 2 September to 5 September.

The symposium has become one of the two major conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) in the field of wireless communications and networking. Originally founded as a workshop in London in 1989, it developed over the years to become a major international conference, attracting technical communities from all regions and continents.
