Key takeaways from EuCNC 2022 |
The 2022 EuCNC & 6G Summit was the 31st edition of a successful series of a conference in the field of telecommunications, sponsored by IEEE Communications Society and supported by the European Commission and the Finnish 6G Flagship Programme. It was hosted in Grenoble, France by CEA-LETI, a French technology research institute, from June 7 to 10. It gave the opportunity to the whole community to meet again after two years of Covid-19 restrictions and online webinars.
The conference focused on various aspects of 5G and 6G communications systems and networks, including cloud and virtualisation solutions, management technologies, hardware components and microelectronic technologies, and vertical application areas. Research projects, from successive European RDI programmes such as Horizon 2020, could demonstrate results and main achievements. It was a success: more than 30 European projects were gathered at the World Trend Center of Grenoble (France) to present results, progress and demos. Among others,

The Beyond 5G and European 6G Initiative |
Research on 5G continues and research on 6G has already started in Europe. Peter Stuckmann, Head of Unit, Future Connectivity Systems and Interim Executive Director, Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking, DG CONNECT, presented the B5G/6G Initiative at EuCNC 2022 on June 10.Peter Stuckmann presented the global 5G and 6G context and compared the 6G Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking with initiatives from advanced wireless markets: In the USA, four major initiatives have been launched:
The roadmap towards 6G was released in Japan as early as June 2020. In South Korea, the MSIT created the 6G programme in September 2020 with 200 million USD of public support. In China, the MIIT elaborated its 6G programme and created the IMT-2030 Promotion Committee. Europe started to implement a flagship system project in January 2021 with eight 6G exploratory projects under the 60 million EUR 5G PPP ICT-52 call. HEXA-X, RISE-6G, REINDEER, 6G BRAINS, AI@EDGE, DAEMON, MARSAL, DEDICAT 6G, TERAFLOW are the 6G-related 5G PPP phase 3 Part 6. projects. The 2021-2022 period benefits from a 240 million EUR budget under the Work Programme dealing with 5G Evolution (stream A on Smart Communication components, systems and networks for 5G mid-term Evolution systems, stream D: Large scale SNS trials and Pilots with Verticals) and 6G (stream B on Research for radical technology advancements towards 6G, stream C on SNS experimental infrastructures) issues. |

SLICES-SC Summer School
This three-day school will take a deep-dive into some of the available open-software and hardware solutions for building experimental telco networks that can be used by researchers to develop innovations leading to 6G network architectures in initiatives such as SLICES-RI, PAWR, Fabric and Horizon Europe SNS JU. A key objective of the school is to highlight cloud-native tools leading to fully converged cloud and telecommunication infrastructures. We will cover initiatives including O-RAN, ONF Aether/SD-Fabric/SD-RAN, OpenAirInterface RAN and Core, Mosaic5G, Magma and related cloud-native frameworks based on Kubernetes. In addition, for newcomers to the 3GPP ecosystem, we will also provide a crash course on 3GPP networks and protocols. Current lecturers are from key players in the experimental wireless research community : Sorbonne Université, NITOS, EURECOM, INRIA, CNR, PAWR, FABRIC, ONF, … More details here. |

AIOTI Signature Event: Societal Impact and Opportunities for the Green Digital Twin Transition
The Green Deal wants to decouple economic growth from resource use by 2050, and transform ‘linear’ take-make-discard industrial value chains into virtuous models that design waste and pollution out of the process, keeping products and materials in use for longer and helping to regenerate ecosystems. At this event, we will explore how, exactly, are digital solutions enabling sustainability gains? Are they contributing to the EU’s green growth now? And what more can be done to stimulate green growth through digitisation? How can IoT and Edge computing contribute achieving to Green Deal and digital twin transition objectives. For more details, please visit event webpage: https://aioti.eu/aioti-signature-event-2022/. The event will take place in the Thon Hotel Bristol Stephanie, Avenue Louise 91/93, 1050 Brussels. |
