5G PPP Platform Cartography |
||
As detailed in the 5G Pan-EU Trials Roadmap Version 4.0 (https://5g-ppp.eu/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/5GInfraPPP_TrialsWG_Roadmap_Version4.0.pdf), experimental platforms for 5G developments and trials in EU are the results of private and public efforts at national and EU level. Accelerating trial capabilities and other pilots, the platforms remain subject to continuous efforts targeting the full 5G picture and future evolutions. As such, the future roadmap of actual 5G infrastructure deployment is highly dependent on the capability to up-date existing or deliver a new relevant and comprehensive set of platforms addressing the remaining gaps and challenges. One should also consider platforms as valuable and demonstrated set of 5G enablers, beyond trial objectives. In order to increase the complementarity of the available platforms and the forthcoming developments, tight coordination is needed, including first in the documentation of the platforms. It is of tremendous importance to describe the matching elements of each platform compared to the complete 5G landscape. This documented orientation helps 3rd parties to assign their interests to the respective platform purpose. To boost access to 5G platforms, it is necessary to help different stakeholders on their knowledge level to identify the right platform targeting their interests. Therefore a common classification and documentation for 5G platforms addressing different target groups is mandatory. Consistent data structures and unified meta information like name of the platform, countries where the platform is deployed and additional information on features and capabilities is fundamental. The data collections provided by platforms have to support questions from diverse stakeholders including research, public sector or industry.
5G Infrastructure PPP Phase 3 platforms projects (2018-2021) started in July 2018 and provide a pan-EU large-scale end-to-end 5G validation network infrastructure, covering about 20 EU sites and nodes on a pan-EU basis. This infrastructure will provide the adequate level of openness to make it possible for vertical industries to test their innovative 5G business cases using ad-hoc network resource control. Have a look at the key platforms and cities of the PPP Phase 3 platforms projects on the dedicated 5G PPP platform cartography webpage here. The Platforms Cartography is currently under further development, to include summary perspectives related to Platforms / Verticals and Platforms / KPIs. The Platforms Cartography is also targeted to include ICT-19 Verticals Pilots information as soon as officially available |

European 5G Observatory Workshop: Is Europe ready for 5G? |
||
The stakeholder workshop “European 5G Observatory – Is Europe ready for 5G?” organised by the DG CONNECT took place in Brussels (Conference Centre Albert Borschette) on Friday, 17 May 2019 from 10:00-16:00. The workshop was the opportunity to review the main findings of the first phase of the 5G Observatory and discuss the next steps to ensure the implementation of the 5G Action Plan.
IDATE Digiworld, who is conducting the European 5G Observatory for the Commission, first presented the main findings of its first phase and stakeholders were able to react and discuss. The workshop offered then the opportunity to reflect on how the Observatory can move from “readiness” reporting to “deployment” reporting. What are the key parameters to measure: fibre backhaul, use of pioneer bands, service capabilities, coverage and quality mapping…? Finally, the last session explored how regulators can facilitate 5G roll-out looking at the implementation and application of the legal frameworks such as the EECC, the cost reduction Directive, and the Net Neutrality rules. Further measures necessary to facilitate the deployment targets were also identified. About the European 5G Observatory The European 5G Observatory was launched in 2018 to monitor market developments and preparatory actions taken by industry stakeholders and Member States in the context of 5G roll-out in Europe and beyond. It enables the Commission to assess the progress of Europe’s 5G Action Plan and take action to fully implement it. The 5G Observatory online platform provides the latest news and key trends in 5G deployment in Europe and world-wide, and its quarterly reports provide snapshots, including scoreboards, of 5G progress, as well as an assessment in view of the objectives of the 5G Action Plan. |

Key take-aways from the 5G-DRIVE Workshop “From 5G experiments to business validation” |
||
The 5G PPP project 5G-DRIVE and China Mobile Research Centre jointly organised the first workshop on ‘5G-Trials – From 5G Experiments to Business Validation’ in Shanghai on 20 May 2019. It was part of the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) in Shanghai, China on 20 May 2019.
A large number of 5G trials are currently being organised around the globe. In the current phase of 5G evolution, where the design phase has been successfully completed and the first set of standards has been released, the focus is now on trialling. The goal of the workshop was to take a snapshot and get feedback from some of the ongoing 5G trialling activities, and also to discuss potential market opportunities for 5G. The organisers of the workshop, 5G PPP project 5G-DRIVE and China Mobile Research Centre, are running a joint project on 5G trialling between the EU and China. As they are well connected in the 5G community, they were successful in distributing the call for papers for this workshop. With 30 paper submissions received, this workshop was ranked number 2 among all 29 workshops. In line with IEEE rules that require a 50% rejection rate, 15 papers were retained. The paper presentations together with three invited keynote speeches and two panel discussions filled a long and interesting day for the about 40 workshop attendees. In the welcome talk the author of this article gave an overview of 5G trialling activities in Europe and showed some statistics e.g. in terms of trials per country, spectrum usage, the participation by vertical sectors in 5G trialling activities and the size of larger trials and first 5G roll-outs around the globe. In the first keynote speech, Chih-Lin I from China Mobile Research Institute gave her view on “The Twists and Turns of the 5G Journey”, which gave a glimpse on the 5G activities of China Mobile and a comprehensive tapping into various aspects of 5G down to more recent topics as e.g. O-RAN which is aims at open interoperable interfaces and RAN virtualisation. In the second keynote, Matti Kutila from VTT shared his insights on activities “Towards Connected and Highly Automated Driving”, which are being addressed in 5G-DRIVE and national projects in Finland. In the first session, five papers on “Recent 5G Trial Activities and Trial Results” were presented. This included a paper about ‘5G Trial Cooperation between EU and China’, an overview of the 5G EVE end-to-end 5G facility for extensive trials, presented by Maurizio Cecchi, and presentations on recent trials of G.metro-based passive WDM fronthaul and database supported flexible spectrum access. The second session addressed aspects related to the 5G architecture and enabling technologies. Results from a number of interesting areas were presented, including the deployment of a 5G architecture for crowd events, an indoor positioning platform to support 5G location based services, and the application and experiments of 5G technology-powered industrial Internet. The third paper session, finally, addressed aspects related to the performance analysis of 5G technologies. Panellists of the first panel session on the potential of 5G for verticals (from left): Matti Kutila, VTT; Maurizio Cecchi, Associazione PIIU; Latif Ladid, IPv6 Forum, University of Luxembourg; Chih-Lin I, China Mobile Research Institute; and Uwe Herzog, EurescomTwo interesting panel discussions were organised: one on the potential of 5G for verticals, and the other on challenges in 5G trials. In the panel ‘Potential of 5G for Verticals’, which was moderated by Wei Deng from China Mobile Research Institute, an interesting debate took place about what revenue operators can assume to actually generate from providing 5G services for vertical sector companies. There was no doubt among the panellists that there seems to be large potential for operators in this area. At the same time the increasing interest from vertical sectors to get individual frequency spectrum allocated, which would allow verticals to build their own 5G network, seems to contradict this. It indicates a certain doubt, at least among some of the verticals, whether they are happy to let operators provide the network for them. A study from a consulting firm was quoted which estimates that about 80 – 90% of 5G revenue will come from eMBB type services, which would leave only 10-20 % for other services – including those for verticals. The panel concluded that keeping the view open into all directions for future 5G revenue is probably a good approach in this early phase of 5G commercialisation. |

5G-MoNArch Testbed in Hamburg |
||
Hamburg, Germany- June 5, 2019 – 10:30-15:30
With the completion of most of conceptual work, and the successful implementation of a testbed in Hamburg, 5G-MoNArch organises a project dissemination event at Dialoghaus in Hamburg! 5G-MoNArch will provide a live experience of the implemented industrial applications for improved sea port operations. The event takes place on June 5th, 2019, from 10:30 to 15:30 at Dialoghaus in Hamburg. The control systems used by the HPA up to date are already the most progressive in the world and the interplay between their sensor technology, analysis, forecasting and information systems delivers significant efficiency improvements. The Smart Sea Port testbed represents the next step in creating a digital port – and in shaping Hamburg’s future. The overall goal of the testbed is to provide a wireless infrastructure that can handle a large number of the use cases of the port’s day-to-day work. As all these use cases have rather different requirements in terms of the reliability (guaranteed network connection), resilience (guaranteed availability, even in the case of failures), and the support for service diversity, but a dedicated communication infrastructure for each of them would be rather inefficient, a 5G mobile network that supports network slicing is the appropriate solution. Within the scope of 5G-MoNArch, the Hamburg Smart Sea Port testbed focuses on three selected use cases that share a common mobile network infrastructure. The 5G radio base station is installed on the television tower close to the Hamburg trade fair and congress centre (extensive coverage). Agenda and registration are available online here. Registration closes on May 29th, 2019. |
