6G-IA Published Two New White Papers

In May 2024, the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) published two White Papers from the 6G-IA Open SNS Working Group.

White Paper: Open Networks and Services Whitepaper, Platform Subdomain

The whitepaper investigates the opportunities of open ICT platforms as an enabler for next generation disaggregated network deployment, provisioning and operation. For this purpose, it provides an overview of most prominent open ICT platforms that support implementation of open networks such as ONAP, Openstack, and Kubernetes as well as a taxonomy and classifications of their openness, features, and complexity.

White Paper: Open Ran and 6G Future Networks Development

This white paper explores the potential benefits and challenges of such architectures in the context of radio access networks (RAN). It also proposes a list of recommendations to European Commission to foster the maturity of open Network aiming at facilitating the future transition to 6G networks in the future.

Call for Hardware Enablers Integrating Emerging Technologies in Extended Reality (XR)

A Call for Hardware Enablers integrating emerging technologies in Extended Reality (XR) with funding amount up to €500.000 has been published. The call targets projects that develop and integrate innovative hardware solutions based on emerging technologies such as 5G/6G, IoT, data, AI, edge and cloud computing, and microelectronics to unlock the potential of XR experiences.

Selected SMEs/mid-caps will get up to €50.000. Interested organisations should apply by 4 June 2024.

5GPPP Projects Announced Participation @ EuCNC & 6G Summit

The 2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit is approaching, and will take place from 3-6 June 2024, in Antwerp, Belgium. The event builds on two successful telecoms conferences: EuCNC, now in its 33rd year in a series supported by the European Commission; and the 6G Summit, now in its 6th year, a spin-off from Finland’s 6G Flagship program, one of the very first in this field. Numerous 5G PPP and SNS projects will be taking part in this event, which brings together the world’s leading telecoms players.

5G PPP projects announced participation

  • The Results of DRAGON will be presented with a paper titled “Embedded component packaging for D-band radio systems ”, authored by Mario Schober, David del Rio, Alberto Chico and Vladimir Ermolov.
  • 5G-BLUEPRINT will take part in Special Session 4: “From 5G to 6G Support for CAM (5G6GCAM)”, the Project Coordinator Johann M. Marquez-Barja (imec) will be talking about the project’s journey and results, introducing the paper “Path to deploy 5G-based teleoperation in Transport & Logistics: The 5G Blueprint lessons learnt”.
  • 5G-ROUTES will present his paper titled “CAM Services Platform: Managing CAM Services in Multi-Domain Cross-Border Scenarios” and will have a shared booth with the 5GMED project which will showcase its use cases.

5GMED Use Case Demonstration and Final Public Event Announcement

Use Case 3 Final Review

On 25 April 2024, 5GMED successfully demonstrated its Use case 3 “Enhance Railway Communication Services works to provide service continuity on the border between Spain and France under the Perthus Tunnel” during the European review at LINEA FIGUERAS PERPIGNAN S.A. with COMSA and i2CAT.

The objective of the Use Case 3 was to demonstrate representative railway communication services performance and business application services in a high mobility environment.

Final Public Event Announcement

5GMED has announced the date of its final public event for June 27, 2024, in Castell de Peralda, Spain. The event will showcase the culmination of four years of dedicated effort by team members, who have worked to develop a 5G deployment model for future mobility within the Mediterranean cross-border corridor.

The day’s agenda will engage all project stakeholders, industry experts, and political figures, providing the audience with project highlights and keynotes. Partners’ panels will share outputs, fostering discussions on the future of mobility. Additionally, demonstrations will take place at the border, providing firsthand insight into the groundbreaking advancements achieved.

5G-ERA @ ICRA 2024

5G-ERA participated in 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) which took place on 13-17 May 2024 in Yokohama, Japan. The theme of this year’s conference was “CONNECT+”, reflecting the conference’s aim to help build relationships and potential collaborations with participants inside and outside their field of study.

The project has hosted a Tutorial titled “Connected Robotics Platform for ROS Deployment in Real-world Network Settings” on 13 May. The tutorial presented a ROS extension called Connected Robotics Platform (CROP) to extend the ROS from only working in structured lab environments into fully scalable at real-world CONNECT+ settings. The tutorial was interactive and included presentations and demonstrations about networking and DevOp aspects of ROS under the connected robotics platform CROP while the participants had the opportunity to ask questions and perform hands-on experiences.

The IoT Solution World Congress 2024 took place on 21-23 May 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. It’s an event dedicated to digital transformation trends and disruptive technologies, showcasing the latest ideas and best practices from industry thought leaders, as well as exclusive previews of cutting-edge technologies and game-changing innovations.

MARSAL and 5GMEDIAHUB projects were present at IOTWC 2024 at Iquadrat Informatica stand, 5GMED was represented by the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC).

VITAL-5G Webinar with the European Shippers’ Council
On 31 May 2024, VITAL-5G organized a webinar with the European Shippers’ Council entitled “Outcomes and lessons from the VITAL-5G initiative”.

This webinar was dedicated to exploring the VITAL-5G project and its results. It looked at the use cases for VITAL-5G, the 5G technology used on ships and storage structures, as well as the challenges and results of these use cases.

5G-ROUTES Demo Presentation @ IEEE NOMS’24
5G-ROUTES participated to IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium which took place on 6-10 May 2024 in Seoul, South Korea. The participation was achieved through Jorge Baranda (CTTC Researcher) presentation of the demo titled “An AI/ML Proactive Network Service Relocation Approach for Multi-Admin Domain Scenarios”.

This demo is a joint collaboration among CERTH, VTT, EVIDEN (ATOS) and eBOS to show how different technological enablers of the CAM Services Platform interact to perform a proactive service relocation of a virtualised CAM service backend from the local domain to the CAM Services Platform instance running in the visited administrative domains following the trajectory of the users of this service.

SCoDIHNet monthly news

The Smart Connectivity DIH Network has mainly worked on the following topics

1/ At the SCoDIHNet May meeting, the Chairman of the Digital group of the Enterprise Europe Network has been invited to make a presentation of the working group and also to validate the action plan put in place with SCoDIHNet:

1/ Presentation of EEN/Digital to SCoDIHNet and SCoDIHNet to EEN/Digital

2/ Identification of DIH belonging to both networks

3/ Completion of the Mapping Smart Connectivity providers with EEN members

4/ Organisation of a common workshop to facilitate exchanges between members from both communities

2/ Following the survey to identify the 5 key services, a first version of the white paper has been developed and is open to comments. It is providing a number of concrete actions that SCoDIHNet could put in place in order to support DIH activity. These activities are taking advantage of all catalogues already developed and also of the 2 platforms facilitating cooperations and sharing best practices.

EuCNC and 6GSummit

Antwerp, Belgium- 3-6 June, 2024

The 2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC, in its 33rd edition of a series, supported by the European Commission; the 6G Summit, in its 6th edition, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area.

The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) and supported by the European Commission.

Scope and overview

MedComNet 2024 will take place from 11-13 June 2024 in Nice, France.

MedComNet is a forum for the presentation of new research results in the broad area of wired and wireless communication and computer networking. All aspects of the networking research area are welcome.

This year’s theme will be “Networking in the AI era”, with the aim of discussing the necessary steps in research for developing next generation networks that can orchestrate, share, process or explain AI in order to contribute to a more sustainable, fair, secured and equal access to AI technologies.

Accepted papers will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore. Extended versions of the best papers presented at the conference will be considered, by invitation and upon additional review, for publication in the Elsevier Computer Networks journal.

The best paper in the conference will be awarded the Mario Gerla Best Paper Award.

Instructions for authors

Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research related to the aforementioned topics of interest. All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in standard IEEE 2-column format. Only Adobe PDF files will be accepted for the review process.

Further instructions (including the submission link) will be published on the website.

Two different categories of papers:

  • Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to ten (10) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding ten (10) pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all.
  • Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and they will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference.

2nd PhD School on Challenges and Technologies for 5G Connected Automated Mobility and 5G-Empowered Media Applications Across Europe

Paris, France – 20-21 June, 2024

Three major European projects, 5G-ROUTES and 5GMediaHUB (EC co-funding) and 5GOpenRoad (BPI co-funding), have teamed up to organize the 2nd PhD School on challenges and technologies for 5G Connected Automated Mobility and 5G-empowered media applications across Europe.

The PhD School is free of charge (excluding travel and accommodation), and will take place on 20-21 June 2024, Paris-Saclay campus, France (the exact venue will be announced later).
The PhD School is a unique opportunity for young researchers (PhD students) and undergrad students (Master students) to get insights on diverse challenges of 5G for CAM in cross-border scenarios (terrestrial and maritime) and on 5G-empowered media applications and NetApps from senior researchers with an academic or industrial background.
The event is also a great opportunity to develop your professional network, both in academia and industry.

Participants are strongly encouraged to submit an extended abstract. Accepted extended abstracts will be presented as posters.

IEEE PIMRC 2024 CALL FOR PAPERS – WORKSHOP PROPOSALS EXTENSION

The symposium has become one of the two major conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) in the field of wireless communications and networking. Originally founded as a workshop in London in 1989, it developed over the years to become a major international conference, attracting technical communities from all regions and continents. After two successful editions in Asia and America, the 2024 edition returns to Europe, and will be held in face-to-face format. PIMRC 2024 will assemble worldwide experts to deliver keynotes, tutorials, workshops, industry panels, and high-quality technical sessions.

Prospective authors are invited to submit original technical papers, as well as proposals for panels, tutorials, and workshops, addressing a wide range of topics in wireless and mobile communications, including but not limited to:
