AENEAS and 6G-IA join forces to build synergies for European leadership in next-generation telecommunications

The two industry associations will seek to strengthen communication and cooperation between them, with the common objective of contributing to Europe’s leadership and technological sovereignty in beyond 5G and 6G networks and services, enabled by a strong European Electronic Components & Systems (ECS) industry.

This MoU demonstrates both associations’ ambition to build on their relationship established within the EU’s COREnect Coordination and Support Action (CSA) under Horizon 2020.

COREnect, which comes to an end in June 2022, brought together European industry and R&D leaders from both the microelectronics and telecommunications sectors. They worked on the joint development of a high-level strategic roadmap of core technologies for future connectivity systems and components, targeting next generation telecommunications networks and services. In signing this MoU, AENEAS and 6G-IA aim to further strengthen the synergies between the private side of the European ICT sector and the ECS ecosystem represented by AENEAS.

The MoU between AENEAS and 6G-IA also aligns with the European Commission’s ambition to drive closer collaboration and more efficient synergies between two new European Partnerships (Joint Undertakings or JUs) set up in late 2021. These JUs mobilize all European stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions in Europe to cover not only technological and business goals, but also societal needs of the European citizens. They include the Key Digital Technologies (KDT) JU, which is directly relevant to the ECS industry, and the Smart Networks and Services (SNS) JU which is relevant to the telecommunications industry. Reinforcing the coordination between these JUs offers the potential to accelerate the development and deployment of technologies for beyond 5G and 6G systems based on European electronic components and systems.

“Many major European and pan-European initiatives are launched to speed up the transition towards a green, climate-neutral, digital and resilient Europe. These include the KDT and SNS partnerships, the IPCEI on Microelectronics and Communication Technologies, the proposed EU Chips Act, and the Xecs Eureka Cluster. AENEAS members are active within all these initiatives, and we believe it’s also essential to bring together the ECS and SNS communities. This will promote increased cross-fertilisation of the microelectronics and connectivity ecosystems, support pooling of research and innovation resources, and ensure that research results are turned into impactful innovations,” says Kurt Sievers, AENEAS President, and President and Chief Executive Officer of NXP Semiconductors.

Dr. Colin Willcock, chairman of the 6G-IA Board and chairman of the SNS JU Governing Board, states: “The SNS JU targets several ambitious objectives, including strenghtening Europe’s technological leadership in digital technologies and supporting industrial uptake of these new technologies to enable the digitization of vertical sectors. In addition, the SNS JU will support key European policies such as sustainability, technological sovereignty, green transition and cyber-security. To achieve these goals, the pan-European mobilization and coordination among various stakeholders from different domains are vital. This MoU between the 6G-IA and AENEAS is an important step to connect complementary European technological sectors and enable creation of globally significant results.”

Among the key actions foreseen in the MoU, AENEAS and 6G-IA have agreed to encourage sharing of non-confidential information through awareness raising events such as conferences and webinars. These will particularly focus on SMEs and opportunities for participation in EU, national and trans-national R&I funding instruments. The associations will also explore possible future coordination among funding instruments, and work to increase cross-fertilisation and mutual contributions to strategic research and innovation agendas, as well as the promotion of cross-domain projects where this appears to be feasible (e.g., EUREKA Clusters). Through such actions, they aim to benefit both their communities along with Europe’s wider social, economic, and environmental goals.

9th Global 5G Event Highlights Success of 5G Progress

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan and the Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5GMF) jointly hosted and organized this event with the six leading 5G organizations throughout the world (5G Americas, 5G Brasil, 5G Forum, 6G-IA, IMT-2020(5G)PG and TSDSI) which are the members of Multilateral MoU partnership to hold the Global 5G Event.

The global 5G event is one of the key global platforms to share the information of latest trends and exchange views on the many topics for 5G and Beyond 5G including unified technology standards.

During the one and half days’ event, 6 sessions were held on topics including Regulation and Polices, Business trend and Commercialization, Network development and installation for 5G Advanced, Prospects from 5G to Beyond 5G, Security and Trust and Initiative of Advanced Service in Japan. 37 invited speakers gave excellent presentations and provided important insights in each panel discussion. In final comments to the distinguished audience, 5GMF suggested that stakeholders in 5G should contribute to realize utilization of full 5G performance in the industrial fields where 5G is needed by 2025 and collaborate with the various areas of research and study on Beyond 5G/6G towards the year 2030.

The 10^th Global 5G Event will be hosted by Republic of Korea 5G Forum in 2023.

Evolved-5G Accelerator Program

Twenty entrepreneurs and start-ups will be selected to join the 5-month program, starting in January 2023. The EVOLVED-5G consortium through an intensive capacity building program will support its participants, by providing them training and advanced business support, coaching on funding opportunities, technical assistance, and business networking to grow their ventures and expand them across the EU.
Applications are open until Wednesday, November 30th 2022.
The EVOLVED-5G Project is funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 Programme, counting 21 partners from 10 countries.

Capacity Building & Training will be provided:

• Business and technical support tailored to the needs of the ventures.
• Training on investment readiness and funding opportunities
• Access to European market opportunities and support through networking events.
• Access to members of the EVOLVED-5G network of 5G and innovation experts.
• Access to EVOLVED-5G project’s network of entrepreneurs, professionals, media, funding companies and international partners.

ICT-41 Projects participation in the 2nd MeditCom Conference

In the context of the 2nd MeditCom Conference which was held in Athens on the 5th8th September 2022, 9 ICT-41 projects participated, with physical attendance, in the joint Workshop titled ‘NetApps into Beyond 5G and 6G Network’ supported by Software Network Working Group.

During this workshop, Antonello Corsi and Giampaolo Fiorentino from ENGINEERING, had the opportunity to present the Smart5Grid main achievements of the first 20 months of the project.

In more detail, they illustrated the Network App definition and descriptor, the Smart5Grid platform and presented Use Case 3 (Millisecond Level Precise Distribution Generation Control). A list of possible extensions foreseen for the upcoming 6G networks was also provided.

This workshop was co-organised by Smart5Grid, EVOLVED-5G, 5G-ERA, 5GASP, 5GMediaHUB, 5G-INDUCE, VITAL-5G and 5G-EPICENTRE and the aim was to bring together all the NetApp stakeholders, discuss their experiences so far and pave the way for NetApps into 6G to span all domainsRAN/CORE/Transport/Devices/Applications.

SCoDIHNet monthly activity report

In October, SCoDIHNet activities have targeted the following subjects:

	Signature of the MoU with Enterprise Europe Network and first interaction with Startup Europe (EISMA) in order to facilitate cooperation between stakeholders at regional level (technology providers and end users)
	Finalisation of the MoU with African DIH (ICT58 projects) and preparation of a webinar to present the 5GPPP and SNS objectives to African DIHs
	Liaison with the new Digital Technology Accelerator project that will ensure the overall coordination of the 200 DIHs that have been selected under the Digital Europe program (more or less one per European region) A second call for additional 15 DIH has been open until 16 November, SCoDIHNet will support applicants
	The Replicability initiative is still working on the collection of solutions/use cases from the 5GPPP projects and also on the development of an assessment tool that will facilitate the selection of the most relevant solutions with regards to the end user needs (DIH customer needs)
	The Digital transformation summit took place in Madeira (25th-27th October https://summit.digit-madeira.pt/), DIHs were in the centre of the discussions as they are the corner stone to succeed the digitalisation of the European Industry. The targeted vertical sectors were health, Maritim transport and Tourism.
	Connecting European Facilities / 5G for Smart Communities cooperation has been initiated as SCoDIHNet is the missing block of the CEF strategy: development of innovation ecosystems around the funded 5G infrastructures
	Cooperation with GAIA-X in order to facilitate the usage of European Data centres in the context of the DIHs application developments
