European Commission “Connectivity Recommendation” |
||
On September 18, 2020, the European Commission took further steps in the Digital Decade agenda to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty, as announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union address.
The European Commission published a Recommendation calling Member States to boost investment in very high-capacity broadband connectivity infrastructure, including 5G, which is the most fundamental block of the digital transformation and an essential pillar of the recovery. In parallel, and closely linked to this Recommendation, the Commission also proposed a new Regulation for the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking to maintain and advance Europe’s leading role in supercomputing technology to underpin the entire digital strategy and to ensure the Union’s competitiveness in the global setting. Executive Vice-President for a Europe fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager, said: “Broadband and 5G connectivity lay the foundation for the green and digital transformation of the economy, regardless if we talk about transport and energy, healthcare and education, or manufacturing and agriculture. And we have seen the current crisis highlight the importance of access to very high-speed internet for businesses, public services and citizens, but also to accelerate the pace towards 5G. We must therefore work together towards fast network rollout without any further delays.” Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, added: “Digital infrastructures have proven to be crucial during the pandemic to help citizens, public services and businesses get through the crisis and yet recent investments have slowed down. At a time when access to broadband Internet represents both a fundamental commodity for Europeans and a geostrategic stake for companies, we must – together with Member States – enable and accelerate the rollout of secure fibre and 5G networks. Greater connectivity will not only contribute to creating jobs, boosting sustainable growth and modernising the European economy, it will help Europe building its resilience and achieve its technological autonomy.” Read the full communication of this Recommendation on the EC website. |

5G Trials in Europe – 5G Experimentation Facilities and Vertical Trials |
||
Online Webinar- 14 October 2020
This online workshop is organised by the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of NCSR Demokritos in the frame of EU projects 5GENESIS and 5G!Drones with the support of the 5G-PPP partnership. The workshop will focus on 5G Experimentation Facilities and Vertical Trials, their current status and future perspectives. Please use the form at the bottom of the page to register. The intense research work on 5G realisation has reached the point where the 5G capabilities are ready to be exploited by third party innovators, also referred to as vertical industries. In this context, the new ecosystem that emerges on service provisioning over 5G and beyond networks has two major stakeholders. On the one hand, the verticals that are ready to take advantage of the performance gains and the configuration flexibility that 5G brings; and, one the other hand, the operators (or infrastructure owners) that eventually have a rich toolbox based on the virtualisation and the network slicing features, which enables new business opportunities. From the technological point of view, in the framework of 5GENESIS project coordination and 5G!Drones trial activities, Dr. Harilaos Koumaras and the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos” invite you to participate at the workshop entitled ”5G Experimentation Facilities and Vertical Trials: Current Status and Future Perspectives”, where the recent developments of the ICT-17 5G experimentation facilities and the ICT-19 vertical trials will be presented. The workshop is further complemented with presentations by invited projects from the Secure Societies and the 5G Long Term Evolution calls, showing 5G trials in the framework of first responder teams and discussing future perspectives of 5G. Go check the agenda and register here. |

Early deployments of 5G features CfP@ IEEE GlobComms 2020 |
||
Taipei, Taiwan – 7-11 December 2020
Call for Papers: WS-15, Early deployments of 5G network features and performance. Scope: 5G systems have been under study for about a decade with the intent of meeting stringent technical KPIs to the benefit of the wireless industry but also and importantly for a diverse set of use cases in the “verticals” or industry sectors. 3GPP has finalised the first release of 5G (Rel’15) and is actively working on Rel’16 targeting acceptance into the IMT-2020 framework. With the current state of the standardisation, the many trials around the world and the early network deployment, an initial assessment of the 5G solutions can be carried out. In particular, a useful comparison can now be done between the initial vision developed at the beginning of the decade and the emerging commercial solutions. Furthermore, the challenges that remain to be addressed can be discussed in several verticals both in unicast and multicast/broadcast contexts (VR, AR, IoT, Multimedia, Health). Organized by one flagship 5GPPP European project, this workshop will bring together the leading names in industry, academia and research institutes to discuss and debate the latest developments in this area. It offers a unique opportunity for researchers in this field to disseminate their results in all radio related aspects of 5G communications to a diverse audience. The workshop invites authors to submit original and previously unpublished research papers in the following and related topics. They could cover traditional mobile networks or any other new 5G vertical applications. Organizers: Simon Fletcher (Realwireless, UK, simon.fletcher@real-wireless.com), Belkacem Mouhouche (Samsung R&D Institute UK, b.mouhouche@samsung.com), and Roman Odarchenko (Bundleslab, Hungary, roman@bundleslab.com) More information on the IEEE GLOBECOM site. |
