Latest 5G spectrum auctions

• Auction 101 of 28 GHz spectrum closed on January 24th, 2019. This auction raised (in gross bids)[1] a total of 702.6 MUSD with a total of 2,965 licenses won.

[1] Gross bids refer to the total amount of provisionally winning bids in Auction 101 at the close of bidding, and do not reflect any small business or rural service provider bidding credits that may be awarded to eligible winning bidders after the auction.  Accordingly, the total amount raised in net bids for Auction 101 may be less than the gross bids amount.

• Auction 102 of 24 GHz began on March 14th, 2019. Auction 102 offers 2,909 licenses in the 24 GHz band. The lower segment of the 24 GHz band (24.25–24.45 GHz) will be licensed as two 100 MHz blocks, and the upper segment (24.75–25.25 GHz) will be licensed as five 100 MHz blocks. See here for additional information. 38 applicants are allowed to bid.
• Preparation for Auction 103 of 37, 39 and 47 GHz spectrum has just started. Comments on the Public Notice on initial-39 GHz-reconfiguration-procedures-and-order-modification are expected by end April 2019.

Austria awarded 20-year 3.4-3.8 GHz licences to the three national mobile incumbents and to four regional players for a total of 188 million EUR. Amounts raised are significantly lower than those reached in Italy in 2018. The three national operators must build at least 300 base stations nationwide before the end of 2020.

Denmark has completed its auction, which started on February 19, of the 700, 900 and 2,300 MHz bands, raising a total of DKK 2.21 billion (EUR 296 million). For what concern the spectrum in the 700 MHz band, the frequency will be available for use from April 4 2020 and the licenses’ duration is 20 years.

5G devices

The Motorola Z3 seems to be the first on the market. It is basically a 4G phone. But the Motorola’s Moto Mod attachment adds a 5G power pack accessory onto the back of the phone and turns it into a smartphone capable of accessing 5G networks. As the Z3 is basically a 4G phone, it is not as such counted as a 5G ready smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is commercially available on South Korean 5G networks since April 2019. It will be proposed by Verizon as from mid-May 2019 in the US.

LG is aiming to get the first 5G phone on the market, and has teamed up with Sprint to deliver a 5G device for release in early 2019. The LG V50 ThinQ will certainly be one of those.

OnePlus has committed to a 5G-capable smartphone in 2019 but no additional information is available yet on OnePlus plans.

The first Huawei 5G phone could be the Huawei Mate X which is targeted to be released sometimes in H2 2019.

HTC’s 5G plans have not been disclosed yet.  Nevertheless there are rumors saying the first 5G HTC smartphone could arrive in the second half of 2019 at the earliest.

The OPPO Reno 5G smartphone is available in Switzerland. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G smartphone is also available there since May 2, 2019.

VIVO smartphones are scheduled for H1 2019.

Key partnerships

In the field of verticals, 5G IA signed cooperation agreements with four organisations.

5G IA signed a cooperation agreement in May 2018 with Public Safety Communication Europe (PSCE), in view of ensuring that 5G wil bring the necessary developments to the security and safety communications for improving the activities of the PPDR community.

In October 2018, the European Space Agency (ESA) and 5G IA signalled their intent to work together and signed a letter of Intent, to enable new and innovative 5G solutions and services in support of European industry and the 5G vertical markets and to further strengthen the ties between the space sector and the 5G IA, with its broad membership from the terrestrial and satellite industries, SMEs and Academia.

The European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO) and 5G IA co-signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of enhancing future cooperation in the field of cyber security and 5G communication networks in December 2018. View the official Press Release here!

5G IA and Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI) released a common vision on Future Networks, Services and Applications early March 2019, a further step to strengthen end-to-end digitalisation in Europe through collaboration between Smart Networks and IoT. Earlier in December 2018, 5G IA and Alliance of Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI) signed a ground-breaking memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the ICT-2018 conference in Vienna. Major Workshops

• The Workshop demonstrated the clear value in having constructive discussions outside of 3GPP on how to improve the engage of MRPs and other 5G Vertical Industry representatives. Following the workshop, this entire report will be presented to 3GPP PCG as a contribution for informational purposes to share all relevant insights.
• There are clear shared goals from across the various 5G vertical industries/sectors, with a great appetite from industry and Standards Development Organisation to receive the input of their respective vertical representatives. There is a need to pool resources, share experience and lessons learnt whilst becoming more familiar with 3GPP as a whole, and also to create a more ‘vertical friendly’ standardization environment to support such efforts.
• This first 5G Verticals workshop provided a much-needed and unique opportunity for this particular group of stakeholders to come together, however, feedback during the final concluding session demonstrated that clearly driving action by verticals within 3GPP would require additional, more focused workshops or meetings between the verticals to turn valuable dialogue into valuable action.
• The core organizational group of verticals have therefore since agreed that regular face-to-face meeting will take place amongst all verticals in line with dates of 3GPP PCG meetings, supplemented by ad-hoc conference calls, also considering the 3GPP meetings schedule. The first iteration of such a meeting will take place ahead of the June 2019 TSG #84 already mentioned.
  Future meetings will involve a more focused audience of verticals, with aims to involve a wider array of said verticals. The aim will be to specifically identify gaps, mergers and possible cooperation on study items with mutual benefits across multiple verticals.
  The decision to organise under this initiative more focused vertical workshop meetings, does not exclude the possibility of other larger mixed and even international events elsewhere to complement; however, based on feedback received during and since the event, such an expanded scope was not seen as the most effective means to drive concrete action by involved in parties within 3GPP in comparison to the focused ‘Working Group’ style approach to be adopted.
• It was also advised by 3GPP representatives that the 5G Vertical group focus on the three major themes to be covered in current and future releases, namely: Industrial IoT and Time-Sensitive; Sidelink Requirements; and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC).

India EU Stakeholders WS. With the support of the Delegation of the European Union to India & the India-EU Cooperation Project on ICT-Related Standardisation, Policy and Legislation, TSDSI and BIF joined hands with 5G IA to organise a workshop to bring together technology experts from the EU and India geographies for sharing their experiences and explore areas of mutual collaboration.

The following action items emerged from the workshop:

• ETSI and TSDSI will work together in 3GPP to achieve harmonization of 5G standards.
• India may consider joining regional 5G Forum activities, like the 5G multilateral MoU, which
  currently has representative members – 5GIA from EU, 5G Americas from North America, 5GMF
  from Japan, 5G Forum from Korea, IMT2020 Promotion Group from China and latest entrant –
  5G Brasil from Brazil.
• The possibility of conducting hackathons and Interoperability events leveraging the multiinstitute
  5G Test Beds programme of India may be explored.
• Continuous dialog among experts, sharing of experiences from trials and implementations, and alignments to ensure globally harmonized standards is crucial for 5G. It was decided to organize similar workshops at regular intervals, to continue this dialog.

TSDSI, BIF and 5G-IA are in discussions to implement the above actions.

Trials Roadmaps

To generate these documents and roadmaps the 5G Infrastructure Association coordinates a 5G Trials Working Group expanding the work initiated by the Industry and EC in the context of respectively the 5G Manifesto of industry in Europe and the 5G Action Plan of the EU Commission.  This group has to date produced 4 Versions of the Trials Roadmap. The version #5 is under preparation could be released before the 7^th G5GE to be organized on 17-18.06.19 in Valencia. The document will a priori include the latest up-dates related to the PPP Verticals and Platforms Cartographies and a selection of 10 of the PPP Phase 2 projects Verticals Trials and Pilots.

Phase 3 (Part 2) Pre-structuring Model

The Model is presenting features and recommendations to guarantee smooth integration of new projects in existing coordinated programme. It is targeting system recommendations to develop future efficient cross-projects cooperation, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of R&I topics, with no gaps or redundancies. Version 1.1 includes up-dates on ICT-20-2019 and ICT-XX-2020 recommendations and recommendations on ICT-ZZ-2020 (Corridors).

The PSM Phase 3.II is focusing on the following EC Strategic Objectives:

• • ICT-20-2019: 5G LTE (RIA) – DL on 28.03.19.
  • ICT-52-2020: Smart Connectivity beyond 5G (RIA) – DL on 22.04.20.
  • ICT-41-2020: 5G Innovations for Verticals with Third Party Services (IA) – DL on 22.04.20.
  • ICT-42-2020: 5G Core Technology Innovations (IA) – DL on 16.01.20.
  • ICT-53-2020: 5G for Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) (IA) – DL on 13.11.19.

Next Steps:

• The PSM Phase 3.II Version 2.0 is targeted for June/July 2019, following the release of the (official) final version of the EC Work Programme 2020. This version will cover the overall set of Strategic Objectives.
• The PSM Phase 3.II Version 3.0 is targeted for November 2019, following the contractualization of the ICT-20-2019 projects. This version will include the key topics addressed by the funded ICT-20-2019 projects, targeting an overall Portfolio-Structuring Model and providing important context for the rest of the PSM Phase 3.II TAs

5G DRIVE WS @IEEE ICC 2019

5G-DRIVE organises a workshop at IEEE ICC 2019 (Shanghai, China) on May 20, 2019

This workshop aims at providing a venue for industry, operators, verticals and academics to disseminate new findings regarding 5G trials and new business developments.
The workshop accepts not only test results from trials, but also theoretical results based on realistic deployment schemes and new 5G business models. The workshop is organised by the 5G-DRIVE project.
The targeted topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to: 5G trial development, 5G Spectrum, Verticals and new services, Measurement and evaluation, Network deployment and optimisation. 30 papers have been received – many of which from 5G PPP projects – and are now evaluated by the TPC.

5GENESIS CfP @ IEEE NetSoft 2019

5GENESIS co-organises with ASTRID, SPEAR, CYBER-TRUST, REAC and SHIELD projects the “1st International Workshop on Cyber-Security Threats, Trust and Privacy Management in Software-defined and Virtualized

EuCNC 2019

EuCNC 2019 is the 28th edition of a successful series of a conference in the field of telecommunications, sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society and the European Association for Signal Processing, and supported by the European Commission. This conference is one of the most prominent communications and networking conferences in Europe, which efficiently brings together cutting-edge research and world-renown industries and businesses. EuCNC attracts more than 600 delegates each year and an exhibition space of more than 1,500 m2. The conference focuses on various aspects of 5G communications systems and networks, including cloud and virtualisation solutions, management technologies, and vertical application areas. It targets to bring together researchers from all over the world to present the latest research results, and it is one of the main venues for demonstrating the results of research projects, especially from successive European R&D programmes co-financed by the European Commission.

EuCNC 2019 will be co-located with the 7th Global 5G Event, which brings together the world 5G industrial associations: 5G-IA, IMT-2020, 5G-Forum, 5G-MF, 5G-Brasil and 5G-Americas.

7th Global 5G Event

The 7th Global 5G Event “Creating the digital Future” will take place in Valencia, Spain in June 2019. The event will be co-located with EuCNC 2019 (18-21 June 2019) and organised by the 5G IA/5G PPP in cooperation with the leading 5G visionary organisations from Brazil, China, Japan, the Americas and the Republic of Korea.

The 7th Global 5G Event is a unique opportunity for 5G PPP projects and European organizations involved in 5G to be exposed to 5G stakeholders from outside Europe. The next G5GE event is likely not to happen in Europe before 3 or 4 years.

The agenda features top class international presenters including business leaders, engineers, professors, technical experts and policymakers. The sessions will cover key aspects of 5G technology like global 5G spectrum harmonization and regulatory issues, 5G from the verticals perspective, 5G trials and pre-commercial launches, key challenges to 5G roll out across the globe, and some thoughts on developments beyond 5G. In addition, two technical sessions will focus on cross regional 5G project ambitions and real world 5G performance KPI measurement.

In addition to the conference presentations, the 7^th Global 5G Event will also showcase state of the art 5G demonstrations by over 50 research and innovation projects.

5G PPP @IEEE 5GWF’19

The 2019 IEEE 2^nd 5G World Forum (5GWF’19) aims to bring experts from industry, academia and research to exchange their vision as well as their achieved advances towards 5G, and encourage innovative cross-domain studies, research, early deployment and large-scale pilot showcases that address the challenges of 5G.

5G-DRIVE, 5G EVE, 5G-VINNI, 5GENESIS, and SLICENET are organising the “2ndWorkshop on 5G-Trials – From 5G Experiments to Business Validation” and calling for papers. The workshop aims at providing a forum for industry and academics to disseminate new findings on 5G trials and new business development. The workshop calls for papers presenting test results from trials as well as theoretical results based on realistic deployment schemes and new 5G business models.

5G Techritory 2019

Baltic Sea region 5G Ecosystem Forum “5G Techritory”, organized by the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia, has become a huge success already in its first year. In 2018 one of the leading 5G technology events worldwide gathered 700 participants, more than 70 senior speakers from Europe, Asia and the USA, leading industry organizations and global ICT companies as the organizational partners and main supporters. 5G Techritory has initiated a new open platform for cross-border, cross-level and cross-sectoral cooperation for the development of a sustainable 5G ecosystem in the Baltic Sea region in line with the European Commission’s Strategy for the Digital Single Market and the Nordic-Baltic digital cross-border cooperation policy and its 5G Action Plan for 2018-2020. The Forum has helped to facilitate establishing new partnerships between global and regional ICT companies, governments, municipalities, business support organizations, universities and other key stakeholders in the region and in the wider European context.

During 3 days of intensive and comprehensive up-to-date program on November 27-29, the Forum will highlight:

FOKUS FUSECO Forum 2019

This year marks the 10th anniversary of our successful and most influential event series FOKUS FUSECO Forum with tutorials, workshops, live demos, a conference, and discussions with leading operators, manufacturers, integrators as well as various industry verticals around the most recent 5G hot topics: state of technology development in terms of standards, products and first solutions derived from international technology and application trials; potential business models in different vertical domains, particularly private networking options and operator network slicing approaches; operator 5G rollout plans, including migration and interworking with 4G, Wi-Fi and satellite networks; relevant 5G testbeds and trials around the globe.

5G-MoNArch Testbed in Turin

With the completion of most of conceptual work, and the successful implementation of a testbed in Turin, 5G-MoNArch organises a project dissemination event at Palazzo Madama in Turin, including presentations or the core research and innovation results and a live demonstration of the Touristic City testbed and its implemented applications. The event takes place on May 24th, 2019, from 10:30 to 14:30 at the Palazzo Madama, Piazza Castello.

The event will start with a workshop providing the perspective of key stakeholders related to smart city digital tourism services on the opportunities that 5Gwill bring in such contexts. The Touristic City testbed will then be open to event attendees for a live Virtual Reality experience of the Madama Reale chamber, accompanied by a detailed insight into the 5G-MoNArch implemented technical solutions and innovations.

The event is co-organised with the essential collaboration of the Municipality of Turin and Fondazione Torino Musei.

5G-MoNArch Testbed in Hamburg

With the completion of most of conceptual work, and the successful implementation of a testbed in Hamburg, 5G-MoNArch organises a project dissemination event at Dialoghaus in Hamburg! 5G-MoNArch will provide a live experience of the implemented industrial applications for improved sea port operations.

The event takes place on June 5th, 2019, from 10:30 to 15:30 at Dialoghaus in Hamburg.

The control systems used by the HPA up to date are already the most progressive in the world and the interplay between their sensor technology, analysis, forecasting and information systems delivers significant efficiency improvements. The Smart Sea Port testbed represents the next step in creating a digital port – and in shaping Hamburg’s future. The overall goal of the testbed is to provide a wireless infrastructure that can handle a large number of the use cases of the port’s day-to-day work. As all these use cases have rather different requirements in terms of the reliability (guaranteed network connection), resilience (guaranteed availability, even in the case of failures), and the support for service diversity, but a dedicated communication infrastructure for each of them would be rather inefficient, a 5G mobile network that supports network slicing is the appropriate solution. Within the scope of 5G-MoNArch, the Hamburg Smart Sea Port testbed focuses on three selected use cases that share a common mobile network infrastructure. The 5G radio base station is installed on the television tower close to the Hamburg trade fair and congress centre (extensive coverage).
