Frankfurt – March 25th 2015 – Today, The 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum Japan (5GMF), a non-profit association, founded under Japanese law, and The 5G Infrastructure Association, an international non-profit association for collaboration on 5G communications systems and networks announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in road mapping and developing the next generation of mobile communication 5G.
Dr. Kohei SATOH, Managing Director of the Japanese Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) stated, “I am looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with 5G Infrastructure Association on all 5G system aspects, including networks, spectrum, business cases and usage scenarios. Our mutual benefits of 5GMF and 5G Infrastructure Association cooperation are characterized by reaching out for an early common understanding on system components substantial for 5G.“
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr. Takehiro Nakamura on behalf of The 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum Japan and Dr. Werner Mohr, Chair of the Board of 5G Infrastructure Association.
Both 5GMF and 5G Infrastructure Association have outlined their respective agendas for 5G, focusing on research, pre-standardization activities and regulatory issues. 5GMF announced its initial 5G technology vision and roadmap on 8 October 2014 (http://5gmf.jp/en/).
5G Infrastructure Association has released their vision white paper on March 3, 2015 (http://5g-ppp.eu/roadmaps/). Dr. Werner Mohr, Chair of the Board, 5G Infrastructure Association, commented, “5G is a global activity and we are looking forward to contribute to the development of globally accepted standards. The cooperation with The 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum at this early research phase will help to develop the 5G vision and to understand 5G requirements in order to shape research and development activities and to build global consensus.”

The Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5GMF) was created to conduct research & development concerning the fifth Generation Mobile Communications Systems and research and study pertaining to standardization thereof, along with liaison and coordination with related organizations, the collection of information, and dissemination and enlightenment activities aimed at the early realization of the Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Systems, all with the aim of thereby contributing to the sound development of the use of telecommunications.

About The 5G Infrastructure Association
The 5G PPP is a collaborative research program that is organized as part of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program – The European Union Program for Research and Innovation. It is aimed at fostering industry-driven research, which is controlled by business-related, performance and societal KPIs. The 5G PPP has a lifetime from 2014 to 2020 and is open for international cooperation and participation. Within this research and innovation framework, the European Commission, with the approval of the European Parliament, has committed 700M€ of public funds to supporting 5G PPP activities. Complementary private investment in the order of five times this amount is expected to be provided by Industry, SME, and Research Institutes to realize the 5G-PPP vision. The private side in 5G PPP is represented by the 5G Infrastructure Association.
