Collaborative White Paper on “Cognitive Network Management for 5G”
The 5G PPP Working group on Network Management and QoS issued a position paper on “Cognitive Network Management for 5G” and asked for inputs.
The final version is now available. Views sent through the online consultation have been integrated.
5G represents a complete revolution of mobile networks for accommodating the over-growing demands of users, services and application. In contrast to previous transitions between mobile networks generations, in 5G there will be a much complex management requirements based on the softwarization of network resources. This ultimately will lead to a system that requires realtime management based on a hierarchy of complex decision making techniques that analyse historical, temporal and frequency network data. Cognitive network management has been proposed as the current solution for this problem, in which the use of machine learning to develop self-aware, self-configuring, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protecting systems will enable cognitive network management. This technology is needed for managing a demanding infrastructure but one that yet has to present scalability and flexibility, such as that needed in 5G. In this paper, the novelties for network management in 5G are presented, including: autonomicity, NFV, SDN, network slicing, architectures, security and KPIs.
All these points are also explained in the context of the current development of network management solutions within the 5GPPP phase 1 projects, including: CogNet, Selfnet, SONATA and 5GeX. The Selfnet management architecture and its possibilities for efficient self-organized network management for 5G based on virtualized and software defined networks have been specifically described. The development of such novelties will pave the way for not only the future of cognitive network management, but for 5G and also the future mobile network generations.

The workshop will build upon its successful predecessors, focus on the 5G RAN design and provide the opportunity to share and discuss final results from the mentioned projects or other 5G research activities. The workshop is col-located with IEEE ICC 2017 (21-25 May 2017). Papers have been submitted by METIS-II so far.
5G-NORMA @4th International workshop on 5G Architecture @ICC 2017
Paris, France- May 25
5G-NORMA is organising the 4th International Workshop on 5G Architecture to be held in Paris on 25 May 2017 alongside with the IEEE ICC 2017.
It is essential to introduce a 5G End-to-End Architecture that allows for a cost- and time-efficient introduction of 5G, that integrates a variety of novel technologies rolled out in various stages, and that is sufficiently flexible to accommodate applications and services that are yet to be envisioned. For example, to allow 5G to support low latency, it is not sufficient to design a low latency RAN, since latency is an end-to-end factor and hence requires the joint design of RAN, Core and Transport Networks. Hence, the new E2E Architecture will have to be programmable, software driven and managed holistically to enable a diverse services in a profitable way. This requires novel ways of designing the mobile network architecture (radio access, core and transport network), operating the network, and offering interfaces.
This workshop will present recent research results covering the need for 5G spectrum and the suitability of the frequency bands under consideration (sub-GHz to millimetre) for 5G to provide ambitious services and adequate coverage, especially leveraging the 5G PPP projects advancements. Special attention will be given to the vertical industry requirements.
As no wireless 5G service can be provided without satisfactory access to radio spectrum – regulatory spectrum availability for enabling timely trials and commercial roll-outs of 5G technology and service provision will be discussed. The availability and selection of the right 5G frequencies is of crucial importance to the current on-going international standardisation, to the European industry stakeholders 5G Manifesto and to the EC’s 5G Action Plan, as also pointed out in the RSPG opinion on 5G spectrum.
The Workshop is organised by the 5G PPP Spectrum Working Group.

➧FANTASTIC-5G, SPEED-5G and Flex5GWare are co-organising the 2nd edition of the 5G PPP Workshop on “5G PHY/MAC Layers Design and Hardware Aspects Below and Above 6 GHz” on June 12th, 2017.
The air interfaces for 2G, 3G, and 4G were all designed for specific use cases (limited only to voice and data communications) with a certain number of limited KPIs in mind (throughput, capacity, dropped/blocked call rates, etc.). However, 5G requires the support of a much broader class of services and consequently a very diverse family of devices and traffic characteristics. The scope of this workshop is to find the major conclusions and results of the FANTASTIC-5G, SPEED-5G and Flex5GWare projects on the design of the new 5G air interface below 6 GHz account that supports all such application constraints. This will specifically include the specific findings regarding 5G new waveforms, flexible air interface for the 5G vertical market, coexistence issues, flexible and adaptive novel MAC design, and a much more dynamic management of the available spectrum resources and advanced sensing techniques. In addition, the workshop will present enabling technology solutions for massive machine-type communication, ultra-reliable communications as well as interference mitigation with FDD and TDD providing 7-10x higher spectral efficiency over LTE 4×4 outcome. Eventually, the workshop will highlight implementation issues of the new 5G air interface for bands below and above 6 GHz, which will pose stringent requirements on the hardware platforms. For this reason, an important topic in this workshop is related to new concepts and solutions for highly performant, energy efficient and flexible hardware (both analogue and digital) in 5G networks.
The workshop will focus on relevant business- and techno-economic-aspects of future 5G networks. It will provide insight on the business impacts and opportunities from the deployment of 5G networks for all actors in the telecommunications ecosystem such as verticals, incumbent and new operators, service providers, application developers, content providers, regulators, equipment manufacturers etc. The potential for new roles such as brokers, aggregators and marketplaces, will also be discussed.
