26 GHz frequencies are gaining traction in Europe |
||
The 24.25-27.5 GHz band (“26 GHz band”) has been harmonised for MFCN in CEPT by ECC Decision (18)06 [1], under the assumption of an individual authorisation framework, and it is recognised to be the 5G pioneer millimetre wave band in Europe. The ECC Decision does not preclude the use of the band by other services to which the band is allocated. Nevertheless, according to this ECC Decision, CEPT administrations shall make available by the end of 2020 at least 1 GHz for MFCN in this band, subject to market demand.
After an initial slow start and 26 GHz frequencies only assigned in Italy at national level as at end December 2019 in the EU, 26 GHz frequencies are gaining traction in Europe. Many actions, consultations, trials and auctions are coming down in numerous countries. The 26 GHz band started to be considered early 2019. These frequencies are being tested and a growing number of countries issued consultations on these frequencies. In July 2019, CEPT developed a ECC report intented to facilitate and provide guidelines to administrations on the development of future national plans concerning fixed links usage in 26 GHz to maximize the introduction of 5G systems in 26 GHz. The guidelines are based on sharing and compatibility studies carried out to evaluate the possibility of coexistence between 5G systems and the Fixed Service and the necessary conditions in the 26 GHz band. The results of all studies for the outdoor 5G network deployment scenarios show that coexistence between both services is possible but requires coordination. However, the amount of spectrum available for 5G systems at individual locations might be reduced by the existing Fixed Service usage. At country level, consultations aim at:
Regarding European trials, the 3.4-3.8 GHz frequencies are still the most tested so far. More than 70% of the trials listed use the mid-frequencies. But the 26 GHz band has been test 5 times in Europe (and the 28 GHz band 12 times) according to the European 5G Observatory latest quarterly report dated December 2019. Six countries issued consultations for 26 GHz frequencies or are investigating auctioning 26 GHz frequencies. Belgium issued a consultation on 5G use of 26 GHz frequencies in May 2019. The Swedish regulator PTS invited stakeholders to arrange phone calls with it on the 26 GHz band in June 2019. The Cyprus government also issued a consultation on its plans to auction several frequency bands including the 26 GHz in September 2019. The Electronic Communications Committee released a draft ECC recommendation (20)01 to pulbic consultation in October 2019 on how to share the lower 26 GHz frequencies between 5G and earth stations. The draft recommendation concerns “guidelines to support the introduction of 5G while ensuring, in a proportionate way, the use of existing and planned FSS transmitting earth stations in the frequency band 24.65-25.25 GHz and the possibility for future deployment of these earth stations”. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate has issued a consultation asking about potential demand fort the 26 GHz band in February 2020. On February 6th 2020, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) published the Public Consultation on the granting of rights of use for various radio frequencies including 26 GHz frequency bands. At last, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has launched early February 2020 a public consultation on the upper 26 GHz frequencies to be auctioned in summer 2020. |

IEEE ICC 5G LTE-IC 2020 CfP |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dublin, June 7-11, 2020
ICC WS-04: 5G LTE-IC 2020 5G-DRIVE is organising a workshop on 5G Long Term Evolution and Intelligent Communication in conjunction with IEEE ICC 2020 and has published a CfP. (http://info.ee.surrey.ac.uk/CCSR/IWSDN/) Workshop Scope: The next generation wireless networks, i.e., 5G and beyond, autonomous vehicle networks, will be extremely dynamic and complex due to the ultra-densely deployed wireless networks. These introduce many critical challenges for signal processing, network planning and operation, network management etc. Meanwhile, generation and consumption of wireless data are becoming increasingly distributed with ongoing paradigm shift from people-centric to machine-oriented communications, making the operation of future wireless networks even more complex. To mitigate the complexity of future wireless network operation, new approaches of intelligently utilizing distributed computational resources with improved context-awareness becomes extremely important. In this regard, the edge computing architecture aiming to distribute computing, storage, control, communication, and networking functions closer to end uses, have a great potential for enabling efficient operation of future wireless networks. Such promising architectures make the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) principles, which incorporate learning, reasoning and decision-making mechanism, as natural choices for designing a tightly integrated network. |
