5G PPP trials roadmaps |
||
The 5G Infrastructure Association launched an activity in 2016 to first, generate a strategy for developing a Pan-European 5G Trials Roadmap, and then, second, to prepare the comprehensive Trials Roadmap. To generate these documents and roadmaps the 5G Infrastructure Association coordinates a 5G Trials Working Group expanding the work initiated by the Industry and EC in the context of respectively the 5G Manifesto of industry in Europe and the 5G Action Plan of the EU Commission. This group has to date produced 4 Versions of the Trials Roadmap.
Two 5G PPP trials roadmaps were released in 2018 and two in 2017. The Roadmap Version 3.0 was successfully presented at the 5th Global 5G Event in Austin (16-17 May, 2018). It addressed the latest up-dates of the Roadmap strategy, 5G Private Trials, 5G Vertical Pilots, 5G Pan-EU Flagship event 5G for UEFA EURO 2020 and 5G Trials Cities. The Roadmap Version 4.0 was released in November 2018. It highlights the key EU cities that are targeted for 5G early deployments, already engaged in 5G pre-commercial/commercial trials and pilots, engaged in 5G R&I trials and pilots and also making available 5G R&I platforms. A description of the major EU cities engaged in the 5G UEFA EURO 2020 Flagship event is also provided. The comprehensive Trials Roadmap document version 2.0 was released before the 4th 5G Global Event organized on 22-24 November, 2017 in Seoul, South Korea. |

For the first time, the Global 5G Event was held in Latin America. The presentations involved around 50 experts. The Fourth edition of Global 5G Events, organised by the 5G Forum on “5G accelerating the 4th industrial Revolution” took place in Seoul, South Korea, in November 2017. It included an impressive set of demos at SKT and LGU+ and at the KT 5G 5G Field trial site in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018 avenue.
The Third issue of the European 5G Annual Journals was released in June 2018. You can download it here. Europe is entering into a critical phase in the global race to 5G and so is the 5G PPP. In that respect, this third edition aims to present how 5G PPP Phase II master 5G technologies and look into their application with relevant users in particular vertical industries.
The Second issue was released in September 2017. It can be downloaded here. The aim of this second edition was to present an analysis of the 5G ecosystem evolution over the past year. It presented the achievements of 5G PPP phase 1 projects almost two years after their launch. |

5G world firsts
In the USA, Verizon and AT&T launched limited service with two different paths to 5G. The Verizon 5G Fixed Wireless Access service was launched on October 1st, 2018 in limited areas of four US cities. It is charged at 50 USD for a Verizon customer and at 70 USD/month for a new customer. Verizon 5G service is not using 3GPP official standards but the 5G TF, a proprietary norm. Youtube is offered for free for the first three months. An Apple TV 4K HR or a Google Chromecast Ultra are free. There is no data caps. AT&T launched its mobile hotspot 5G service on December 21st, 2018. It is available only for “early adopters” in limited areas of twelve US cities. More cities will be covered in 2019. The service is free for the first three months and will be charged at 70 USD/month after. 15 GB of data is included. In Europe, Elisa in Finland and Estonia, achieved a 5G phone call between Ministers in the two capital cities in June 2018. A speed of 2.2 Gbps was reached. Outside the US and Europe, Ooredoo Qatar announced it launched a 5G Fixed Wireless service in May 2018…as it is wiating for 5G compatible devices, expected early 2019. 5G spectrum auctions In Europe and all around the world 5G spectrum auctions are heating up. A number of mid-band frequency auctions were completed in 2018 (Italy, Finland, South Korea, Spain, UK) with discrepancies in prices. South Korea, Italy and the USA became the first countries to auction mmwave spectrum. Additional auctions are expected in 2019, including Austria, France, Germany and Belgium for 3.4-3.8 GHz frequencies and the USA for mmwave spectrum and spectrum above 35 GHz.

CfP Workshops @IEEE WCNC – CLEEN 2019 |
||
Marrakech, Morocco – April 15-18, 2019
WS on How cloudy and green will mobile network and services be? 5G-Transformer and 5G-Coral jointly organise the 7th workshop on Cloud Technologies and Energy Efficiency in Mobile Communication Networks@ CLEEN 2019 and call for papers. This workshop explores novel concepts to allow for flexibly centralised radio access networks using cloud-processing based on open IT platforms, exploiting network virtualization and multi-access edge computing technologies that are recognized as key enablers for the definition of future 5G systems. This workshop will cover technologies across PHY, MAC, and network layers, technologies that extrapolate the cloud-paradigm to the radio access and backhaul network, and will analyse the network evolution from an energy efficiency perspective. It will study the requirements, constraints, and implications for mobile communication networks, and also potential relationship with the offered service, both from an academic and industrial point of view. For more information on the Workshop read more here. WS on Cloud Design 5G is expected to introduce disruptive use-cases thanks to its ultra-reliable, low-latency, high-speed connectivity such as remote healthcare, autonomous cars, advanced robotics, AR/VR, IoT… But this “golden digital age” will not become a reality with today’s bulky mobile networks Infrastructure-As-A-Service model and a more agile and powerful model directly inspired by web scale players “cloud-native” approach is required. This model leverages Micro-Services Architecture (MSA) and is called the Platform-As-A-Service:
An ideal 5G PaaS should not only facilitate building, shipping and running virtual network functions (VNF) with “telco-grade” quality, it should also combine those VNF with all sorts of third-party applications (from start-ups, FOSS, Verticals…) for creating new more versatile and powerful cloud objects breaking silos between connectivity and computing. More information here. WS on advanced 5G radio access network features and performance
5G-XCast and ONE 5G are co-organising a workshop on Advanced 5G radio access network features and performance at IEEE WCNC in Marrakech, Morocco (15-19 April 2019) and call for papers. WS on “Satellite-terrestrial interworking: a pillar of forthcoming 5G systems” SaT5G and 5GENESIS are co-organising the Workshop “Satellite-terrestrial interworking: a pillar of forthcoming 5G systems”, with 5GALLSTAR to be held at the IEEE WCNC conference on April the 15th 2019, in Marrakech, Morocco. They now call for papers. This workshop aims at discussing recent technology developments, at highlighting still open issues, and at identifying related business opportunities and the market perspectives of a smooth satellite-terrestrial networks integration. Recent theoretical and experimental results, coming out mainly but not only from a few key international research projects, as well as standardization efforts and regulatory bodies matters in the direction of satellite-terrestrial interworking will be discussed and clarified.
