5G PPP wishes you a happy new year 2024
Dear community, we’re delighted to send you our best wishes for the New Year. We hope it will be a year of success and achievement for all of you.
The currently ongoing Research & Innovation projects under the 5GPPP umbrella are part of the last two phases of the 5G PPP, namely Phase 3.5: 5G Core and CAM projects and Phase 3.6: 5G Innovations and Beyond 5G.The year 2024 will mark the end of the 5G PPP, the aim of which was to secure Europe’s leadership in specific areas where Europe is strong or where there was potential to create new markets, such as smart cities, e-health, intelligent transport, education or entertainment and media. The 5G PPP has helped reinforce the European industry to successfully compete on global markets and open new innovation opportunities.

5G PPP Steering Board and Technology Board – “5G PPP in review” Brochure

The 5G PPP Steering Board and the 5G PPP Technology Board published their paper “5G PPP in Review”. This paper “documents the 5G PPP approach, captures a summary of the delivered work and major achievements, assesses its effectiveness, and looks ahead to how the progress made by 5G PPP can be built upon by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU), and more broadly through Horizon Europe”.

5G PPP 2023 Infrastructure PPP Trials and Pilots Brochure #4

The fourth issue of the Trials and Pilots brochure was out at the end of November 2023.

The PPP projects have created a plethora of advanced European telecommunication solutions. They also ensured an extremely high momentum and dynamism for the actual trials of these solutions as well as the further development of 5G systems on the road towards 6G networks, including 6G Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking (JU).

The first three “5G Infrastructure PPP – Trials & Pilots brochures” released in September 2019, December 2020 and August 2021 highlighted 30 of the most impactful Phase 2 and Phase 3 Trials & Pilots. These were selected by a panel of experts that assessed their impact and potential. The current brochure n°4 leverages the experience from the previous brochures (including call for inputs and selection by a panel of experts) and brings the attention of readers to 10 additional Phase 2 and Phase 3 Trials & Pilots.

The document demonstrates that the majority of these Trials & Pilots have a significant social impact. They either validate a service that can be monetised or/and introduce a unique disruptive innovation in applications or services.

EU and Canada launch Digital Partnership to strengthen strategic cooperation

On 24 November 2023, at the 19th EU-Canada Summit, President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Trudeau launched the EU-Canada Digital Partnership. The initiative reflects a shared vision for a digital economy and society at the service of people, in a context of accelerating digital transformation and geopolitical uncertainty. The EU and Canada have agreed to work together in crucial areas such as artificial intelligence, secure international connectivity, cyber security, online platforms, digital identity and digital skills.

42 projects selected for EU funding of up to EUR 260 million under second CEF Digital calls

On 1st December 2023, the Commission has selected 42 projects out of 69 proposals.

Subject to the grant agreements signatures, the projects will receive funding to deploy safe, secure, and sustainable high-performance 5G and digital backbone infrastructure, for a total funding amount of up to EUR 260 million.

The 42 projects involve coordinators from 18 different countries and a total of 179 partners.

The projects range from deployment of 5G infrastructure for local communities and along major European transport corridors, to deployment of submarine cables within and to the EU.

The Commission approves up to EUR 1.2 billion of State aid by seven Member States for an Important Project of Common European Interest

The Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, an Important Project of Common European Interest (‘IPCEI’) to support research, development and first industrial deployment of advanced cloud and edge computing technologies across multiple providers in Europe.

The project, called IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), was jointly notified by seven Member States: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain.

The Member States will provide up to EUR 1.2 billion in public funding, which is expected to unlock additional EUR 1.4 billion in private investments. As part of this IPCEI, 19 companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises (‘SMEs’), will undertake 19 highly innovative projects.

ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference – Call for Demonstrations and Posters Open

Sophia Antipolis, France – 5 – 7 February, 2024

The ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference: Status, Implementation and Way Forward of AI Standardization, is place face to face on 5-7 February 2024 in ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, France.

Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) technology has made major advancements in recent years and is becoming a key enabler for new disruptive features and applications in any digital product.

The ETSI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference will focus on AI/ML from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) perspective.

The conference programme will cover topics such as new technological trends in the field of AI/ML, related standardization activities in ETSI and other Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), AI/ML regulation in Europe (European AI Act) and world-wide, implementation of AI/ML regulation with the help of standards, and related impact on product design and conformity assessment for market access. Demonstrations and posters on the latest advances in the field of AI/ML applied to ICT systems and applications will complement the conference programme.

European Research and Innovation Days (R&I Days) 2024

Brussels, Belgium – 20 – 21 March, 2024

The European Commission’s annual flagship R&I event brings together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and the public to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond.

This fifth edition of the event will take place on 20 and 21 March 2024 both physically in Brussels and online, allowing everyone to get involved from anywhere.

The R&I Days 2024 will give the opportunity to discover successful EU-funded research and innovation projects, experience their impact on our society and to debate the importance of continued investment in research and innovation. It will celebrate the outcomes and achievements in research and innovation since the launch of the first R&I Framework Programme over 40 years ago.

Information on Horizon Europe, including the Strategic Plan 2025 – 2027 and its Widening Instrument; R&I support to Green and Digital transition; its Global Approach; and many other topics will be disclosed.

ETSI Conference on Non Terrestrial Networks

Sophia Antipolis, France – 3 – 4 April, 2024

The ETSI Conference on “Non-Terrestrial Networks, a Native Component of 6G” will take place face-to-face on 3-4 April 2024 in ETSI, Sophia Antipolis, France. The conference is co-organized with the ESA , 6G-IA and the SNS-JU.

  • The event will foster discussions on the following topics:
  • Targeted use cases that will be enabled by NTN in 6G
  • Possible 6G architecture frameworks (including interfaces) enabling the native integration of the NTN components
  • Candidate technologies/features for NTN in 6G
  • Standardization approach (e.g. what, where, when) for NTN in 6G

Additionally, the event will be an opportunity for research organizations (academia and industrial research) to discuss new trends and features in the field of NTN solutions in the perspective of standardization.

Posters from the latest projects in the field NTN / satellite / 6G technologies may be provided to complement the conference programme.

IEEE INFOCOM is a top-ranked conference on networking in the research community. It is a major conference venue for researchers to present and exchange significant and innovative contributions and ideas in the field of networking and closely related areas. IEEE INFOCOM covers both theoretical and systems research. EuCNC and 6GSummit

Antwerp, Belgium- 3-6 June, 2024

The 2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC, in its 33rd edition of a series, supported by the European Commission; the 6G Summit, in its 6th edition, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area.

The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) and supported by the European Commission.

IEEE International Conference on Communication ICC 2024

Scope and overview

MedComNet 2024 will take place from the 11th to the 13th of June 2024 in Nizza, France.

MedComNet is a forum for the presentation of new research results in the broad area of wired and wireless communication and computer networking. All aspects of the networking research area are welcome.

This year’s theme will be “Networking in the AI era”, with the aim of discussing the necessary steps in research for developing next generation networks that can orchestrate, share, process or explain AI in order to contribute to a more sustainable, fair, secured and equal access to AI technologies.

Accepted papers will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore. Extended versions of the best papers presented at the conference will be considered, by invitation and upon additional review, for publication in the Elsevier Computer Networks journal.

The best paper in the conference will be awarded the Mario Gerla Best Paper Award.

Instructions for authors

Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research related to the aforementioned topics of interest. All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in standard IEEE 2-column format. Only Adobe PDF files will be accepted for the review process.

Further instructions (including the submission link) will be published on the website.

Two different categories of papers:

  • Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to ten (10) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding ten (10) pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all.
  • Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and they will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference.

IEEE PIMRC 2024 CALL FOR PAPERS – WORKSHOP PROPOSALS EXTENSION

The 35th edition of the annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) will be held in Valencia, Spain from 2 September to 5 September.

The symposium has become one of the two major conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) in the field of wireless communications and networking. Originally founded as a workshop in London in 1989, it developed over the years to become a major international conference, attracting technical communities from all regions and continents. After two successful editions in Asia and America, the 2024 edition returns to Europe, and will be held in face-to-face format.
