Leading 5G Visionary Organizations in Europe and China to Cooperate
Beijing, China and GENT, Belgium – September 29th, 2015 – Today, IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, a 3-ministries initiative on 5G, and The 5G Infrastructure Association – Public Private Partnership (5G PPP), an international non-profit association for collaboration on 5G communications systems, announced their Memorandum of Understanding.
Cao Shumin, Chair of IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group stated, “5G PPP and IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group are the major organisations of steering 5G R&D in EU and China, respectively. Both of them have vital impacts on global 5G development. This MoU not only sets up a platform for the two sides to promote comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in 5G, but also lays a foundation to facilitate globally unified 5G standardization as well as the development of 5G industry and applications.”
The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed by Chair of IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, Cao Shumin and Chair of the Board of 5G PPP, Werner Mohr, outlines the basis for ongoing cooperation and collaboration between the two organizations. The MoU specifically sets forth the agreement to share information on basic system concepts for 5G, frequency spectrum to support the global regulatory process and preparation of future global 5G standards by identification of common interest and consensus building.
Currently, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has started the initial planning process for IMT-2020, the next generation of mobile networks called “5G” which is expected to be deployed in 2020 and beyond. Both 5G PPP and IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group have established work programs on 5G examining the various elements of use cases, requirements and component technologies. IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group has published their recommendations on 5G vision, requirements, concept, and technology architecture (www.imt-2020.cn), and pointed out that 5G will be capable to greatly enhance the user experience of mobile Internet and efficiently support massive connections of Internet of Things (IoT). 5G PPP has voiced their objective that the next generation of communication networks and services will provide ubiquitous super-fast connectivity and seamless service delivery in all circumstances utilizing very high capacity integrated IT and telecom infrastructure.
Werner Mohr, Chair of the Board, 5G PPP, commented, “Our mutual goals with IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group and their insight on the requirements for 5G in China will be valuable for the planning work at 5G PPP. This is an agreement that will help the mobile industry make the most of the valuable work at both our leading 5G visionary organizations and will support consensus building during the preparatory phase of future standards.”
